A GENERAL REVIEW OF THE 2012 VODAFONE GHANA MUSIC AWARDS

- by Osborne Datsomor,Tuesday, April 17, 2012

THE 13TH EDITION OF THE GHANA MUSIC AWARDS INDEED RECEIVED A LOT OF HYPE THIS YEAR ESPECIALLY AFTER VODAFONE GHANA TOOK OVER ITS SPONSORSHIP FROM MTN GHANA LTD.

A LOT WAS DONE FROM PROMOTIONS TO PUBLICITY ON RADIO AND TV AND THE MASSES WHO COULD OR COULD NOT AFFORD TO PURCHASE A TICKET ANTICIPATED IT WITH EQUAL MEASURE.
FINALLY ON APRIL 14TH, 2012. THE GHANA MUSIC AWARDS WAS RIPE TO BE EXECUTED AND THIS IS MY REVIEW ON EVENTS THAT TRANSPIRED ON THAT FATEFUL NIGHT.

LET ME START FROM THE RED CARPET;

AS USUAL,K.O.D WHOM ALSO BEING THE NEWEST CELEBRATION IN THE GHANAIAN FASHION SCENES WITH HIS REPUTED "NINETEEN57" CLOTHING LINE WAS AN O.K CHOICE TO HAVE BEEN A FASION POLICE OR HOST FOR THE RED CARPET.
HE WAS ASSISTED BY THE AFRODISIAC NIGHT CLUB C.E.O AND GHANA'S REPRESENTATIVE AT THE MNET BIG BROTHER AFRICA 2011 EDITION, IN THE PERSON OF CONFIDENCE HAUGEN.

I DONT HAVE MUCH COMMENTS ON THAT, EXCEPT TO SAY THEY DID THEIR JOBS WELL.
HOWEVER, IT WAS MUCH TO THE DELIGHT OF THE AUDIENCE BEHIND THE RED CARPETS WHEN CONFIDENCE HAUGEN HAD A CHIT CHAT WITH HER EX BOYFRIEND EDEM, A CELEBRATED MUSIC ICON AND ONE OF THE PERFORMING ACTS AND NOMINEES FOR THIS YEAR'S MUSIC AWARDS.

THE SHOW STARTED ON AN INTERESTING COMEDY AND DRAMATIC NOTE, WHEN CHRIS ATTOH , THE HOST FOR THE SHOW THAT NIGHT WAS RUNNING HALF NAKED ON THE STREETS OF ACCRA, AND STEALING OUTFITS FROM CLOTH VENDORS ALONG THE ROAD, JUST TO GET DRESSED FOR THE SHOW.

EVENTUALLY HE HAD TO BRIBE FUNNY FACE, ONE OF GHANA'S CELEBRATED STAND-UP COMMEDIANS IN ORDER TO GET INTO THE VENUE BECAUSE HE SUPPOSEDLY DID NOT HAVE HIS PASS.

COMING FROM TWO SEASONED ACTORS, IT WAS WELL ACTED OUT AND FOR A MINUTE I THOUGHT I WAS WATCHING A MOVIE.

ANYWAY, EVEN THOUGH THE SCRIPT FOR THE DRAMA HAD A PURELY GHANAIAN OUTLOOK, IT LOOKED LIKE THE IDEA TO START THE SHOW IN THIS MANNER WAS BORROWED FROM OTHER AWARD SHOWS LIKE THE BET AND MTV AWARDS IN THE WEST.
HOWEVER, I HAVE NO REASON TO COMPLAIN BITTERLY, I GUESS THEY WERE JUST RE-INVENTING THE WHEEL.

THE SHOW FINALLY BEGINS AT WHATEVER TIME, BECAUSE I REALLY WAS NOT TAKING NOTE OF IT.
AND NOW THIS IS WHERE MY REVIEW OF THE SHOW ACTUALLY BEGINS.

CHRIS ATTOH HANDLED THE MC-ING OF THE SHOW AT WHAT I DESCRIBE AS ABOVE AVERAGE, THE DUDE WAS AT HIS VERY BEST AND THIS GAVE ME A NOSTALGIC EXPERIENCE OF HIS EARLY AND LATTER DAYS ON RADIO.
HE LOOKED VERY PRESENTABLE IN HIS SUIT AND HAD THE CHARM AND CHARISMA NEEDED TO WISK ANY LADY AWAY IF HE WANTED TO, JUST LIKE IN HIS PLAYBOY ROLES IN SOME MOVIES HE FEATURED IN.

HIS PERSONALITY, PRESENCE AND COMMAND OVER THE STAGE AND OVER THE AUDIENCE WAS EVIDENT AS HE VIRTUALLY THREW THE CROWD OUT OF THEIR SEATS WITH WITTY JOKES AND "PUNCHLINES" AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SHOW.

HOWEVER, AS THE SHOW PROGRESSED, HIS NATURAL ABILITY TO MAKE FUNNY JOKES AND COMMENTARIES BEGAN TO WANE AS SOME OF HIS JOKES AND WITTY LINES BEGAN TO SOUND FORCED AND EXAGGERATED AND THE AUDIENCE RESPONDED TO THIS, BY LAUGHING VERY LITTLE AT HIS REMARKS.

HOWEVER FUNNY FACE WAS THERE TO HELP MATTERS A BIT, AND ,HE AND CHRIS HAD A WONDERFUL CHEMISTRY GOING ON BETWEEN THEM AS THE SHOW PROGRESSED.
FUNNY FACE, THE CO-HOST OF THE SHOW WAS HIS USUAL SELF AND THE CROWD LOVED HIM AS ALWAYS.

DJ BLACK, A CELEBRATED GHANAIAN RADIO DJ WAS ALSO ON POINT WITH HIS DECK AND SO I HAD VERY LITTLE TO COMPLAIN EVEN THOUGH HE SEEMED TO BE VERY TIME CAUTIOUS ABOUT ENTERTAINING THE AUDIENCE WITH SOME OF HIS SELECTIONS, AND THAT I DID NOT REALLY LIKE.

FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE DJ BLACK, THE PEOPLE CAME TO THE SHOW IN THE NAME OF MUSIC, SO PLEASE DO NOT HOLD BACK. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE MUSIC IS GOOD AND THE CROWD IS ON THEIR FEET GROOVING TO IT. LOL.

OVERALL, I THINK THE STAGE SETTING WAS BETTER THAN THE FORMER.
KUDOS TO WHOM EVER WAS IN CHARGE OF DESIGNING AND SETTING THE STAGE. PROBABLY BECAUSE THE EVENT WAS HELD AT THE DOME, THE STAGE WAS SMALL AND RESEMBLED THAT USED FOR TALENT SHOWS LIKE THE AMERICAN IDOLS AND SO FORTH BUT IT'S SIMPLICITY WAS O.K.

MAKE UPS: THE MAKE UPS MOST FEMALE ARTISTS WORE TO THE STAGE TO PRESENT OR RECEIEVE AWARDS, WAS SIMPLY TOO MUCH OR OUT OF PROPRTION. NOTABLY THAT EAZZY AND LYDIA FORSON.

MY PROBLEM WAS THAT, THEY HAD SOME PARTS OF HER FACE LOOKING DARKER THAN OTHER REGIONS AND THAT MADE THIER BEAUTY LOOK SOMEWHAT ARTIFICIAL.
MY FORENOTE TO MAKE UP ARTISTS WHO ATTEND TO OUR CELEBRITIES IS THAT THEY SHOULD LEARN TO PRACTICE THEIR CRAFT WELL.

I THINK A LOT HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT THE AWARDS CATEGORY AND SONG NOMINATIONS,
HOWEVER I FELT SOME SONGS DID NOT SIMPLY STAND A CHANCE AGAINST OTHERS IN A PARTICULAR CATEGORY OR NOMINATION.
THIS IS BECAUSE SOME SONGS IN CERTAIN CATEGORIES WERE YOUNGER THAN MOST AND AS SUCH DID NOT RECEIVE A FAIR LEVEL OF EXPOSURE AND AIR-PLAY AS THE OTHER SONGS. HOWEVER THE NEWNESS OR OLDNESS OF SOME SONGS PLAYED TO THE ADVANTAGE OF OTHERS AND VICE- VERSA IN SOME CATEGORIES.

PERSONALLY, I WAS NOT HAPPY WITH THE PICTURES OF NOMINEES SHOWN PRIOR TO THE PRESENTATION OF AWARDS TO THE WINNERS OF A PARTICULAR CATEGORY.

SOME OF THE PICTURES OF SOME NOMINEES WERE SIMPLTY TOO OLD OR WERE POOR IN PIXEL QUALITY AS COMPARED TO OTHERS.
I SUGGEST THAT THE NEXT TIME, A PHOTOGRAPHER SHOULD BE EMPLOYED AND NOMINEES ASK TO PRESENT THEMSELVES AT A PHOTO STUDIO FOR THIER PICTURES TO BE PROFESSIONALLY TAKEN.

IN THE LINE OF SHOW BUSINESS, IMAGE IS VERY IMPORTANT.

I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT THE ONLY AND MAJOR FLAW IN PRESESTING AND AWARDING A NOMINATION CATEGORY.

A TECHNICAL ERROR, ACTALLY A MIX UP IN AN AWARD CATEGORY OCCURED WHEN ONE OF GHANA'S RENOWNED PRODUCERS, POPULARLY KNOWN AS APPIETUS , MOUNTED THE STAGE TO PRESENT AN AWARD FOR THE CATEGORY OF BEST HIPLIFE / HIPHOP ACT OF THE YEAR.

MUCH TO MY DISMAY, APPIETUS EVEN THOUGH HE WENT ABOUT IT SUBTELY, OPENLY LAMBASTED CHARTER HOUSE FOR THE ERROR, WHICH I THINK WAS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL OF HIM.

THERE IS AN ADAGE THAT SAYS , IF YOU BEND TO LOOK AT YOUR NEIGHBOURS ANUS, NOTE THAT SOMEONE IS ALSO LOOKING AT YOURS.

I FELT HE SHOULD HAVE SPARED CHARTER HOUSE THAT CRITISM IN PUBLIC BECAUSE THE CREDIBILITY OF CHARTER HOUSE ORGANISING THIS EVENT HAS ALWAYS FACED SOME LEVEL OF MISTRUST AMONG THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND THIS IS A MAJOR DENT TO THE IMAGE OF THE BUSINESS OUTFIT THAT THEY ARE WORKING HARD TO MAKE PEOPLE FORGET.

BESIDES, AN AGENT WORKS IN THE INTEREST OF HIS EMPLOYER, AND SINCE CHARTER HOUSE WAS PAYING APPIETUS FOR THAT HONORARY SERVICE HE WAS RENDERING TO THEM, HE HAD BY THAT RESPONSIBILITY HE HAD ACCEPTED, BECOME AN EMPLOYEE BY AGENCY.
AND THEREFORE, IT IS PURELY UNETHICAL FOR AN EMPLOYEE TO SOIL THE IMAGE OF THE BUSINESS OR HIS EMPLOYER TO THEIR CUSTOMERS.

ON THE ISSUE OF SHOWMANSHIP,
I THINK THAT ON THE PART OF SOME OF THE ACTS THAT PERFOMED THAT NIGHT, I COULD NOT HELP BUT SIT BACK IN MY CHAIR AND SHAKE MY HEAD IN DISCONTENT.

LET ME START WITH GIFTY OSEI, AN AWARD WINNER AT THE SHOW IN THE GOSPEL CATEGORY.
SHE WAS ONE OF THE PRIME PERFORMING ACTS FOR THE SHOW. HER PERFOMANCE WAS NOTHING EXTRAORDINARY BUT TYPICAL OF MOST GOSPEL MUSIC ARTISTS AT SUCH SHOWS.
BUT I FOUND HER OUTFIT VERY,... LETS JUST SAY IT WAS NOT SO GOOD.
HER DESIGNER SHOULD BE MORE CREATIVE NEXT TIME.

NOW IS THE TURN OF SOUTH AFRICAN HIPHOP MUGUL, HHP (DOUBLE HP), THE FELLA PERFORMED SOME GREAT TUNES, HOWEVER, THE REACTION FROM THE CROWD WAS VERY DISCOURAGING TO ESPECIALLY ANY FIRST TIME PERFORMER IN A PARTICULAR COUNTRY.
AND THIS ISSUE REMINDS ME OF A BONE I INTEND TO PICK WITH GHANAIAN AUDIENCES AT SHOWS LATER.

NOW I FOUND HHP'S PERFOMANCE LACKING THAT NIGHT IN CERTAIN CONTEXTS.
FINE, HE EXIBITED A FEW DANCE STEPS HERE AND THERE OVER THE STAGE WITH HIS HUGE SELF.
BUT IT SEEMED HE WAS LIMITED TO SOME PARTS OF THE STAGE.
IN PLAIN LANGAUGE, HE DID NOT OWN THE STAGE ON WHICH HE WAS PERFOMING AT ALL.

SECONDLY, HIS INTERACTION WITH THE CROWD WAS ZERO. HE MADE ABSOLUTELY, LITTLE OR NO EYE CONTACTS WITH HIS AUDIENCE AND DID NOT INVOLVE THEM IN HIS PERFORMANCE IN ANYWAY AT ALL.
MY ADVICE IS, LEARN THE STAGE CRAFT SIR, BECAUSE AS A RECORDING AND PERFOMING ARTIST, THAT IS AN ELECTIVE SUBJECT WHICH YOU CAN NOT AVOID, ELSE YOU FAIL YOUR CLASS.

CABBO SNOOP, DESPITE THE FACT THAT I AM NOT A FAN OF THE DUDE.
I BELIEVE MEANINGLESS AS THE SONG IS TO GHANAIANS, THE SONG "WINDECK" HAS OUT LIVED ITS AGE IN THE MOTHERLAND.
CHARTER HOUSE SHOULD HAVE LOOKED FOR ANOTHER ACT TO REPLACE MR. SNOOP.

CROWD REACTION TOWARDS THE SONG HAD DROPPED CONSIDERABLY IN COMPARISON TO THE LAST TIME HE PERFORMED THE "WINDECK" SONG ON A GHANAIAN STAGE.
FOR HIS REPLACEMENT, I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO WATCH WIZKID OR DUNCAN ALMIGHTY PERFORM SINCE THEY WERE BOTH NOMINATED FOR AFRICAN ARTIST OF THE YEAR AWARD.

THEN CAME THE TURN FOR SAKORDIE AND EFYA TO PERFORM THEIR CURRENT HIT SONG, TITLED "AM IN LOVE WITH YOU".
TO MY SUPRISE SAKORDIE'S PROTEGE, AWAL WHO WON ONE OF TV3'S TALENTED KIDS EDITION CAME UP STAGE WITH A GIRL TO DO A RENDITION OF THE SONG.

A FAULTY MICROPHONE KILLED THE PERFORMANCE FROM THE WORD GO, AS BOTH YOUNGSTERS HAD TO EXCHANGE MICROPHONES TO HAVE A TURN AT THEIR ROLES IN THE PERFORMANCE.
BESIDES, I COULD SENSE THEY, AWAL AND THE GIRL WERE VERY NERVOUS PEFORMING INFRONT OF ALL THOSE PEOPLE.

JUST WHEN I WAS BEGINNING TO FEEL THE BORE OF THE WHOLE PERFORMANCE, SAKORDIE AND EFYA CAME TO SAVE THE DAY.

I EXPECTED THEM TO DO BETTER THAN THE KIDS, HOWEVER, THEY DID NOT DO SO GREAT.
I FELT EFYA DID NOT GIVE HER ALL IN TERMS OF HER VOCAL ABILITY AND SHE COULDN'T CAPTIVATE ME WITH HER PERFOMANCE LIKE SHE NEVER FAILED TO DO.

SAKORDIE WHO HAPPENS TO BE THE OWNER OF THE SONG, GAVE ME THE IMPRESSION ,HE WAS ONLY ASSISTING IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SONG,

EVEN THOUGH THE SONG WAS A MELLOW TEMPO LOVE SONG, HE SEEMED TOO RESERVED AND SO BACKGROUNDED AS THE WHOLE PERFORMANCE WENT ON.
HOWEVER, SAKORDIE MANAGED TO PULL IT OFF WITH "WON TUMI NSEI NO" WITH CASTRO AMIST MICROPHONE DIFFICULTIES.

NEXT ON MY LIST IS THE LATEST DANCEHALL SENSATION, KAAKI.
HER OUTFIT SEEMED INAPPROPRIATE AND THERE WASN'T ANYTHING STYLISH ABOUT IT.

IF I WANT TO GO ANY FURTHER IN DESCRIBING HOW IT LOOKED, ANYONE MIGHT THINK I HAD AN ISSUE WITH HER.
BUT LET ME PUT IT THIS WAY, HER SKIRT OR WHATEVER IT WAS SHE WORE WAS TOO SHORT, AND GIRL I DIDNT FIND YOUR THIGHS THAT ATTRACTIVE, THICK BUT OUT OF TASTE.

HER HAIRSTYLE WAS NOT THAT GREAT EITHER.
GIRL YOU NEED TO FIRE THAT HAIRSTYLIST OF YOURS, BESIDES I HAVE SEEN YOU SPORT THAT PARTICULAR HAIRSTYLE A COUPLE OF MONTHS BEFORE VODAFONE EVEN STARTED CREATING A BUZZ FOR THE GMA, HMMMN !

KAAKI'S PERFORMANCE THAT NIGHT WAS A SHADOW OF HERSELF AS COMPARED TO HER DAYS AT THE STARS OF THE FUTURE EDITION SHE FIRST FEATURED IN.
PERSONALLY I THINK SHE WAS ROBBED IN THAT COMPETETION THOUGH.

ANYWAY, I MADE UP AN EXCUSE FOR HER DEFENCE THAT ,THE HEELS SHE WORE WAS PROBABLY TOO HIGH FOR HER AND THAT TO AN EXTENT LIMITED HER MOVEMENT ON STAGE.
MY ADVICE TO KAAKI, IS TO WORK OUT THAT BODY AND FIND A NEW HAIRSYTLIST AND WARDROBE EXPERT ALL TOGETHER.

MOST PEOPLE WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PERFORMANCES OF THE CHOCOLATE CITY BOYS FROM NIGERIA AT LEAST I WAS, THE GROUP CONSISTED OF BRYMO, JESSE JAGS, ICE PRINCE AND M.I.
THEY DID THE BEST THAT THEY COULD BUT M.I ONCE AGAIN OVERSHADOWED HIS LABEL MATES WITH HIS STAGE CRAFT WITH ICE PRINCE COMING AT SECOND PLACE.
A PERFOMANCE WHICH I THINK IS AN IMPROVEMENT ON HIS PERFORMANCE AT THE LAST YEAR'S GHANA MUSIC AWARDS CEREMONY.
ANYWAY CONGRATS TO ICE PRINCE AGAIN FOR WINNING AFRICAN ARTIST OF THE YEAR AWARD.

LET ME TOUCH ON DRESSING / WARDROBES HERE A BIT.
IT WOULD CAUSE AN UPROAR IN THE MEDIA ESPECIALLY FOR A FEMALE ARTIST TO HAVE HER UNDERWEAR EXPOSED ON STAGE IN THE GLARING EYES OF THOUSANDS OF AUDIENCE AT A SHOW.
HOWEVER, WHEN THE GUYS COME ON STAGE AND GALAVANT UP AND DOWN THE STAGE WITH THEIR SAGGING PANTS AND THE OUTLINES OF THEIR GRUTUS MAXIMUS SHOWING IN THEIR BOXERS, IT IS SEEN AS PERFECTLY NORMAL.

WELL THIS IS MY TAKE ON THE ISSUE,
I FIND IT VERY DISTASTEFUL, IN FACT, IT REDUCES THE ESTEEM OF THE EVENT ESPECIALLY AMONGS THE ELITE IN THE SOCIETY.
FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE THE WIFE OF FORMER PRESIDENT LT. JERRY JOHN RAWLINGS WAS THERE WITH HER DAUGHTER TO WATCH THE AWARD CEREMONY. OH PLEEEAASE !!

EVEN THOUGH I AM A HIP HOP PERSON, I AM NOT A FAN OF THE SAGGING PANTS IN HIP HOP CULTURE. EVEN THOSE WHO STARTED IT IN THE U.S.A ARE NOT DOING IT ANYMORE, SO WHY CONTINUE?
NO NEED TO ANSWER THAT, ITS A RHETORIC QUESTION, BUT YOU KNOW WHOM YOU ARE (PLURAL).

SOME CELEBRITIES HAVE NO FASHION SENSE AT ALL OR MAYBE AGAIN, IT IS THE FAULT OF THOSE WHOARRANGE THIER WARDROBES.
I GOT A FEW NAMES HERE, CHASE, ZIGI AND STAY - JAY.
PLEASE DISTINGUISH YOURSELVES FROM THE ORDINARY PEOPLE AND ADD SOME GLAMOUR TO YOUR LOOKS. I REPEAT, IN THE LINE OF SHOWBIZ, IMAGE IS EVERYTHING.

I WOULD LIKE TO COMMEND, BECCA, OKYEAME KWAME, FRITZ AND 4X4 FOR THEIR WARDROBE IT WAS SIMPLY A SIGHT TO BEHOLD.

I DONT KNOW WHETHER OR NOT TO INCLUDE THIS BUT, I THINK BERTHA WHO WANTS TO BE KNOWN NOW AS YAAYAA, SHOULD PUT ON A LITTLE WEIGHT.
PLEASE DO WELL TO FIRE THOSE IN CHARGE OF YOUR WODEROBE, THEY SHOULD HAVE FOUND YOU SOMETHING ELSE TO WEAR.
BY THE WAY CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING BEST COLLABORATION OF THE YEAR WITH OKYEAME , I BELIEVE YOU DESERVE THAT AWARD FOR THAT SONG AND ITS VIDEO.

I AWARD BEST PERFORMERS OF THAT NIGHT TO EDEM'S "OVER AND OVER", GURU'S "LAPAZ TOYOTA" AND KWOA KESE AND DADIE OPANKA'S,"FOR THE POPPING".

LATEST MUSIC SENSATIONS STONE BWOY AND BEAT MAKER, EL, ALSO DID A GREAT JOB PERFORMING CONSIDERING THAT IT WAS THEIR FIRST TIME PERFORMING ON SUCH A BIG STAGE.
YOU GUYS WERE CRAAAAAAAAZY CHALIE.

O.K NOW BACK TO SERIOUS BUSINESS, ON THE WHOLE, THE GHANA MUSIC AWARDS WAS A BIT MORE IMPROVED AS COMPARED TO THE FORMER, EVEN THOUGH I STILL BELIEVE THERE IS MORE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.
BUT I AM OPTIMISTIC THAT WE ARE IN FOR A WHOLE NEW EXPERIENCE NEXT YEAR. ESPECIALLY AS VODAFONE IS SPONSERING THE AWARDS CEREMONY NOW.

WITH THE VODAFONE ICONS COMPETETION I HAVE NOTICED VODAFONE'S LOVE FOR TRYING OUT NEW THINGS AND IMPROVING ON THEIR LOT.
I RATE THIS YEAR'S GMAs, A 7.9 OUT OF 10.
