Kawanopado wins 2012 Indomie Community Dunks

The grand finale of the much-awaited 2012 Indomie Community Dunks basketball competition finally came off at the El Wak Sports Stadium over the weekend.

Cape Coast side Kawanopado stole the show to win the prestigious competition. The Kawanopado lads beat off competition from more fancied sides like Cantonments and Dansoman to emerge champions.

After topping the group – which featured Dansoman, Cantonments and Asokwa – Kawanopado were the wire-to-wire favourites to lift the trophy, and rightly so. The event ran for nearly 10 hours and had its fair share of magical moments, injuries and controversies like any other sporting event.

The smallest and youngest basketball player of the tournament, 8-year-old Michael of Kawanopado, left a magnificent impression on the championship with his amazing skills and set-plays.

The boys from Cape Coast made history at the El Wak Stadium as coach of the side, Claudius Thompson, orchestrated the most unlikely victories using the point guard as his dominant play and went on to describe the victory as the proudest moment in basketball and not in his life.

"Well, I describe it as the proudest moment in Ghana basketball, not in my life. And it’s the first time Ghana basketball had under-15 year olds having the platform to come and show their talents and skills,” he said.

“I will say my guards were very dominant. They did a good job rebounding the ball, and I say big-ups to the smaller guys."

However, when asked about his set targets, this is what he had to say:

"I am looking forward to playing in Cape Coast and winning more championships in the future."

Coach Claudius Thompson also thanked the sponsors and power-house behind the event, Rite Multimedia.
