Historic win for Lydia Mato at US Junior College Cross

Ghana’s Lydia Mato clocked a historic win at the 2014 US NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championship held at the Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock, Texas on November 8, 2014.

Mato who is a standout at Barton College in Kansas, USA, becomes the fifth runner in Barton history to win the individual championship. Competing in her first season of cross country, the sophomore from Ghana won the title by 24 seconds over Iowa Central Community College's Viola Kebenei (Kenya).

The duo, Mato and Kebenei, had battled on two occasions throughout the season as each had won a race in head-to-head competition. However, Mato took home the ultimate prize crossing the tape in 17:05. The title is an INCREDIBLE sixth national title for Mato who extends her dominance from the track to cross country having won every award possible during the 2014 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
