Joseph Yandal wins Volta Regional Millennium Marathon

Former national champion Joseph Yandal edged out favorite Godwin Adukpo to win the maiden edition of the Volta Regional millennium marathon held in the Volta regional capital Ho.

Joseph, a police constable began the race on a very high note and zoomed into the lead just after covering 6 kilometers and kept the pace till he completed the 10.5 kilometer race in 32minutes.

An excited Joseph Yandal said the reason behind the victory was hard work and determination.

“There is nothing behind; the most important thing is dedication, hard work and self motivation. Ever since I was young my passion is to be a national athlete” he said.

Godwin Atsu Adukpo, former national champion was second and Kwesi Savi from Ho-Bankoe came third for the male category.

Meanwhile another police constable Elizabeth Bortsor crossed the finish line in 35 minutes to be crowned champion in the female category with Deborah Gah from Mepe coming second as Yayra Misiso of Bator placed third.

The winners were given certificates and home appliances and would be representing the region in the national event on September 5.

Madam Helen Ntoso, Volta Regional Minister congratulated the winners and tasked them to win the national. She said the Regional Coordinating Council would sponsor participants who came
fourth and fifth to join the six winners for the national event.

Mr Ashim Morton, Chief Executive Officer, Millennium Marathon Sports Limited, organizers of the event described the Regional marathon as the best so far with over 3,500 participants.

“This is massive. The turnout is great with many volunteers, keep fit clubs, pupils and students. We are happy even with the hundreds of spectators,”
he said.

The marathon searches for talented Ghanaian marathoners across all regions ahead of the national event slated for 5th September 2015 in Accra.

Eastern Region would host the next regional event in Koforidua.
