GBA organises course for boxing coaches

Accra, Sept 29, GNA - The Ghana Boxing Association will organise a one month coaching course for boxing coaches from October 4 to November 4.

The course, which will be non-residential, will take place at the Sports Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Mr Peter Assandoh, technical director of the GBA who announced the course on Friday said all spheres of boxing including tactical, technical, scoring, rules and regulation and medicine in sports are in the course content and successful participants will receive preliminary certificates in boxing coaching.

He said he and Eddie Blay, a former world rated boxer and an Olympic Games medallist would be the resource persons for the technical and tactical aspects of the course, while Mr Godfrey Cobblah will treat scoring and rules and regulations of boxing.

The technical director said regular ringside doctor Charles Sonne would be in charge of medicine in sports while Mr Moses Foh-Amoaning acting chairman of the GBA dilates on the rule and regulations of the GBA.

He said so far, 19 coaches have registered to participate in the course and hoped the opportunity would be extended to interested coaches in other parts of the country in due course.

Mr Assandoh said after the preliminary course, participants would qualify for the intermediate and advance courses, which would put their coaching abilities a cut above the ordinary.

The technical director said after the course the face of Ghanaian boxing would change because boxers would be adequately trained and better prepared to rejuvenate the sport.

In 2002 Peter Assandoh, technical director of the GBA won first place when he participated in international certificate and diploma courses for boxing coaches in Italy. He beat a field of 32 to achieve that feat.
