TEMASCO, MERRIES win Zone One athletics

Tema Secondary School (TEMASCO) and St Mary’s Secondary School (MERRIES) produced great potentials to win the boys’ and girls’ divisions respectively at the 33rd Greater Accra Inter-School Zone One Athletics Championship which ended at the Accra Sports Stadium last Friday.

TEMASCO scored 98 points ahead of the 84 and 74 points gained respectively by the Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC), Legon, and Accra Academy in second and third places.

Merries’ 130 points in the girls division was a convincing winning mark, since TEMASCO and Christian Methodist Secondary School (CHRIMESCO) could only manage 101 and half points and 70 points respectively, to place second and third in that order.

Significantly, the best schools in both divisions fell short of producing the best athletes.

Nathan Kpegah of Kinbu Secondary, whose school found no place in the honours list, was rather adjudged the best athlete of the competition.

Kpegah came first in both the boys’ 100m and 200m events and was marked out as being the most influential athlete in the 100m x 4 and 400m x 4 races.

His feat was matched by TEMASCO’s Muniratu Issakah, who claimed that prize in the girls’ division.

Muniratu was first in the 100m, second in the 200m, first in the high jump and also displayed unmatched potential in the relays, according to the judges.

Indeed, her contribution was vital to the second position her school attained in the girls’ division.

But again, she was given a run for her prize by Belinda Frimpong of MERRIES who came second in the 100m in a time of 13.12 sec, just a 100th of a second behind Muniratu, who clocked 13.11 sec. Remi Chobbah, also of MERRIES came third in a distant time of 13.75 sec.

In the boys’ division, Kpegah’s time of 11.30 seconds in the 100m was closely followed by Prince Avemegah of TEMASCO in second place in 11.32 sec and Michael Anim Addo in third place in 11.34 sec.

Other event winners were: girls discus, Sertina K. Okang (CHRIMESCO); boys’ javelin, Peter Kwame Mante (PRESEC); boys’ high jump, Julius Segbedzie (Chemu Secondary School); 3000m (girls), Edwina Quaye (Odorgnonno Secondary); 5000m (boys), Kennedy Agbemafle (Kaneshie Technical); girls’ 400m x 4, MERRIES; boys’ 400m x 4, TEMASCO; girls’ 400m, Adelaide Addy (MERRIES), and boys’ 400m, Paul Korley (TEMASCO).
