Andre Ayew scores for Marseille on injury return

Ghana forward Andre Ayew stormed out of injury to score for Olympique Marseille in their 3-1 win over Metz on Sunday.

The 24-year-old hit the back of the net to restore his side’s lead in the 59th minute after Florent Malouda had cancelled Andre Pierre Gignac’s opener.

Marseille needed the win badly to return to the summit of Ligue 1 after PSG had taken temporary charge a day before in their win over Nantes.

Gignac put Marseille on its way with his 43rd-minute opener.

But Marcelo Bielsa’s side suffered a setback with Malouda pulling the visitors level a minute into the restart.

But Andre Ayew, who had not played for his club since the last international break due to injury, scored to restore Marseille’s lead – much to the delight and relieve of the home fans.

Dimitri Payet put a gloss over the win with an injury time finish to hand Marseille a 3-1 win and a return to the top of Ligue 1.

Ayew’s return however serves as major boost for Ghana with the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations barely a month away.
