Mr Kwakye Dopoah-Dei has been re-elected as Captain of the Accra Polo Club for the 2014/2015 season at this year’s AGM held on the club’s premises in Accra.
With his re-election, Mr Dopoah-Dei becomes the only person to have held the position for the fourth time.
The AGM, chaired by Alhaji Yusif Ibrahim, a former trustee and past captain of the club, saw other members such as Mr George Agyemang, Ricky Khubchandani, K.K. Apeadu and Wassem Helwani being elected to serve on the executive committee.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Dopoah-Dei, who doubles as the president of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA), thanked members of the club for renewing their confidence in him and promised to promote polo locally and internationally, while concentrating more on youth development.
He urged the youth to take polo more seriously since it could earn them scholarships to some British and America universities.
“We will organise more tournaments this season and use the proceeds to support orphanages and the Cardio-thoracic Centre’, he assured.
Joel Dopoah-Dei, son of the captain and skipper of the youth team, also disclosed that he and his teammates were currently preparing feverishly towards a four-nation tournament in December.
Mr Agyemang also hinted that the new polo season would begin in the middle of the month and that all the horses were in good shape for competitions.
As usual, this year’s polo calendar is packaged with an international flavour as some foreign teams are expected to storm Accra in the coming weeks.
