Ghana Handball Coaches go to school

A coaching clinic under the theme Handball – Fun, Passion & Health has been held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday December 11, 2013 with a call on the coaches to go out the villages, towns and cities to groom young talented players for the nation.

Luisa Estiga, a Portuguese handball expert who conducted the clinic said handball is great sport that can change lives like any other sport so the participants must propagate the good news of handball and make more people love the game.

She took the participants through the basic rudiments of handball and taught them new techniques in the game. She tasked the National Sports Authority (NSA) and sponsors to organize more competitions to generate interest of the sport in the country.

Estiga said her interest lies in teaching kids how to play the game and improve to be better players. The member of the International Handball Federation hinted that the FIFA World Cup would be interesting to watch because she now has many Ghanaian friends, but was sure Christaiano Ronaldo and his colleagues will beat Ghana, despite the fact that the Black Stars are a fearful side. Supt (rtd) Twumasi Ankrah, a retired international handball coach and player who graced the event said it had not been easy organizing the game over the years, but with the determination and the newly found desire of the coaches, the game will grow in Ghana and soon the nation will boast of international stars.

He said it is about time that the government built indoor sports facilities in the major cities to train sports men and women. He was not happy that football alone takes a greater share of the sports budget and was afraid that with the qualification of Ghana to the next FIFA World Cup in Brazil, other sports would be affected.

Coach George Bankole of the Ghana Handball Association (GHA) charged the coaches to put hat they learnt into practice and promised that the GHA will monitor them to see their progression.
