Sports Delegation Return From Commonwealth Confab

Accra, (Greater Accra) 28 Oct.,

Ghana's sports delegation to the first commonwealth conference on sports and development in Edinburgh, Scotland returned home today. The conference which was under the theme "Building a nation through sports" formed part of the just-ended Commonwealth Heads of State summit. It brought together 230 delegates including 14 Ministers of Sports from 45 countries to discuss the role and importance of sports in national development. Mr. E. T. Mensah, Minister of Youth and Sports, who led the delegation, told newsmen at the Kotoka International Airport that the aim of the conference was to demonstrate to the policy makers of the commonwealth nations that much can be achieved through sports. It also examined how sports could help develop healthy people. He said that delegates at the end of the conference agreed on a framework of action which was passed on to the Commonwealth Community on Co-operation through Sports (CCCS) for consideration. The framework dealt with sports policy, the youth as the focus for promotion of sports in member countries and the promotion of more opportunities for women to participate in the management and administration of sports. Giving his impression, Mr. Mensah said the conference was very educative, adding that Ghana has already set a seminar in motion to analyse its sports development.
