Thanks for enlightening us with this nice article to help whip up our anticipation of the tournament. Once again we are back to the good old argument about foreign/local coaches. We could debate this all day. At a time when all our best players leave for Europe or failing that to Egypt or Tunisia, it is difficult for me to attempt to even compare the standard of our local football with these other countries. Again if you saw the training facilities available to Kotoko, you would appreciate why our standard of training and coaching is nowhere near that of Europe or even Egypt. We still have to send our coaches on attachment to European Clubs to learn new methods. It is fair to say, that at this point in history, the standard of a GOOD foreign coach who has coached in European leagues is way above our indigenous coaches who have coached just in Ghana. And we are not merely preparing for the African Cup, we intend to go to the World Cup as well.
It is not merely a question of black coaches against white coaches, in our example. We need to start from the basics, invest in our local leagues, improve training facilities to world standards, establish a West African College of Coaching to offer top class coaching badges to our local coaches to improve their confidence and professionalism and so on.
When we do decide on indegenous coaches, then at least one hopes they are selected through a competitive process so we can get the very best. This said, I hope our coach is able to deliver the goods, for after all, when it comes to tournament football tit is not all about professionalism and competence - history, tradition, good luck, spiritetc all come into play. I wish the Black Stars all the best

Sooner than later Papa Appiah will be calling for a foreign president to rule Ghana. Let's be proud of what we have and make improvements where necessary.

YOUR POINTS AND THOSE OF ARTHUR'S ARE WELL RECEIVED. I GUESS THE NEED FOR CONTINUITY MUST ALSO BE SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED. GROWING UP IN THE 70's, BLACKSTAR SELECTIONS WERE KNOWN WAY BEFORE PLAYER CALL-UPS. THEY WERE KNOWN BECAUSE TRANSPARENCY AND COMPETITIVENESS AFFORDED THE NATION THE NEEDED CONTINUITY IN THE PLAYING AND COACHING BODIES. A FEW CHANGES HERE AND THERE DID NOT AFFECT EFFECTIVENESS AND CONTINUITY. THERE WAS A SYSTEM THAT YIELDED RESULTS.
GHANA LOST ITS FOOTBALL FOCUS AFTER THE 1978 ACN. THE CONTINUITY ABATED AND WITH IT THE EFFECTIVENESS. 1982 WAS JUST AN ABERRATION. KOFI BADU AND ASAASE'S GROUP WERE, WHAT WE USED TO CALL, "FRÈ FRÈ KOBO". BECAUSE THE SYSTEM HAD BROKEN DOWN AFTER 1978, THE '82 TEAM COULD NOT BE EFFECTIVELY RE-ORGANIZED.
THE EXCITING OBSERVATION RECENTLY HAS BEEN THE MANNER IN WHICH AKWASI APPIAH IS USHERING IN A SYSTEM THAT COULD RE-INTRODUCE THE CONTINUITY AND, RESULTANTLY, THE EFFECTIVENESS TO SUSTAIN ITSELF. APPIAH KNOWS HOW OUT OF KILTER THINGS HAVE BEEN FOR GHANA FOOTBALL, AND I AM HOPING, WITH BATED BREATH, THAT THE OLD EFFECTIVE SYSTEM WOULD BE RE-INTRODUCED. WIN OR LOSE, BRINGING BACK THE SYSTEM OF CONTINUITY AND EFFECTIVENESS MAY BE APPIAH'S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT.

For heaven sake. It is too early to start making comparisons and argument about foreign coaches and what have you. After the cup has not been won yet. The tournament has not even started. Mr editor can you please spare us this digression and let us concentrate on how to win the cup. Then those who think they know best can then come and show off to Ghanaians. We must be careful not to count our chickens before they are hatched.

Kelekele or whatever, you can please yourself. Don't think trying to praise your own work will convince Ghanaians who think well. Ask your self what is the purpose of your article? To tell Ghanaianas the African coach is already a success. Ghana can win this tournament. But we cannot win it if people start making comparisons based on 2 friendly matches.

A solid management team looks for coaches that are deemed the best in terms of strategic and cultural competence as well as commitment. At a specific point in time, one of these points, two or all of them may serve as the major criterion for selection - and depending on the situation at hand. It may well be that a local coach may fit the cup or not - but not necessarily a local coach; so, Mr. Kennedy, don't root unnecessarily too much for a local coach when the need for it doesn't arise though I personally support the claim that the present Ghanaian coach is ripe for the job.

Professionally one would want the team you coach to win, to enhance your professional career. But for the sake of national pride, you would want your country to win. Either way its a win for the foreign coach.

Good analysis. The author could also have added that even some highly homogenous and nationalist society have foreign coaches. For example, both Japan and Saudi Arabia are both highly homogenous societies with no visible ethnic and cultural differences among them. Yet, both of these nationalistic societies have foreign coaches without feeling inferior. I guess, if you have nothing to prove, there is no place for inferior complex.
On that note, if someone were to ask me, I would take foreign coaches such as Pep Gardiola, Del Bosque,Tito Vilanova over any local coach anytime, no matter what. Well, we can't have them so Appiah is okay.
Good Luck Coach Appiah and the Black Stars.

I bet you that all those who root for foreign coaches, have their interest and they are racist.Apart from the Dede Ayews case which bothered on discipline, who can tell me for instance that players in camp don't deserve to be there.A lot of presenters have never kicked a ball and talk as if they are the best coaches in the world. In the past we have seen players invited who become the subject of discussion in the media. When Kwasi puts Asamoah Dian in the reserve bench to ensure he does not get injured before the tournament, they complain. When Kojo Asamoah is deployed at the left back to ensure that he lends support to the attack on the left they complain.Which foreign coaches have ever won us a cup?Coach Appiah ,God be with you.You took a little close to two weeks to select a team to win the Africa games in South Africa without the Ayews who failed to turn up.May be you are jealous or some of you who are agents would have wished your players to be there, but this time its no.LEAVE KWASI IN PEACE
