Afede calls for Phobian paradigm shift

Hearts of Oak are set for a paradigm shift in their appointment of substantive leaders, especially to the position of Chief Executive Officer. Board head, Togbe Afede XIV, has been speaking about his personal displeasure about the way things are done at the club.

"Let me emphasize on the important need for us to change course in terms of the former concept of a CEO for Accra Hearts of Oak. I personally, I’m uncomfortable with a CEO who cannot be a full time servant of the Oak tree," he told Angel FM on Thursday.

The chairman wants someone who will have the role as his day job, rather than as a supervisory function.

"I’m uncomfortable with the concept of a CEO who is not on a salary. I don’t see how a CEO can devote full time on our club if he is not on salary. I just don’t see how it works."

Afede spoke passionately about the need for things to change with the Accra giants, hinting at a more professional way of doing things.

"We want a change of direction. We want a professional manager who will devote 100% of his time to Accra Hearts of Oak which means that some of the names being bundled around may not be consistent with the current thinking."

To this end, Hearts are looking for an occupant to the position, meaning that the pool of hopefuls will be severely cut, as most of the names being linked are already busy people.

"We want people who will come to Accra Hearts of Oak expecting to be paid a salary or some agreed remuneration. So the board is working very tirelessly to get the desired calibre of person to head the management team of Accra Hearts of Oak and I can assure supporters that this is what we are looking very hard on but in the absence of a substantive CEO, the board is giving all support to the management team that is in place to ensure that the right things are done," the royal emphasized.

And finally, he outlined what can be called the new vision for the stewardship of the club, so long as he remains on top of affairs. "We want the right leadership for Accra Hearts of Oak whose interest will be consistent with those of the club; somebody who is on remuneration and in whom we can be confident enough and have the moral courage to call to account."

Togbe Afede XIV's is seeing his power over the club solidify as more of his decisions continue to go unchallenged in this very traditional-oriented of Ghana football giants. It is not clear if he has sweeping support from all quarters, but for the moment, he is having his way.
