Clottey must not be "lazy":Van Der Plyum

Berekum Chelsea coach Hans Van Der Plyum has suggested that Emmanuel Clottey must not be "lazy" but rather work on his physical strength in order to succeed at Esperance.

Clottey was snapped up by the Tunisian giants on the back of a successful season in the Caf Champions league where he scored 12 goals, helping the Berekum based side to qualify for the Group stage of the competition on the clubs first attempt.

Speaking to www.liquidsportsghana.com, Berekum Chelsea Coach Hans Van Der Plyum said Clottey has the qualities to succeed but needs to work harder on his physical endurance.

“He has to work on his physical strength,” he said. “If I look at the situation with us, he (Emmanuel Clottey) was not training too many times. He didn’t make too many training hours.”

“If you want to succeed in football in the long term, you have to train. You have to train your body so that you get the strength to go for one and half hours.”

The former Ashgold and Hearts of Lions coach added “What I know is that he has a lot of qualities. He has to work a lot harder. That he has train more and then I think he can become a fantastic striker.”

Clottey, who is eligible to play for the North African team in December, will be joining compatriot Harrison Afful in the team. Hans Van Der Plyum says Afful’s presence in the team could be crucial for Clottey to settle into his new environment quickly.

“I think one advantage is that Harrison Afful is there so he can communicate with this compatriot. That is very important for Emmanuel Clottey.”

Clottey joined Esperance for $1.5million earlier this month.
