Yegoala urges footballers to play golf

Football legend Tony Yeboah has no illusions whatsoever that golf is the right sport for all ages and the former football star is urging his fellow professionals to take up playing golf once their playing careers are over. Yeboah goes into golf action again this weekend at the Ghana Open and in what could be a big boost to the sport perceived to be reserved for the rich and wealthy, the former Leeds United hitman is singing the plusses of playing golf and is asking all to get involved.

“Playing golf has taught me that it’s a game that is active and challenging because when I was playing football and my friends were telling me to come and play golf, I told them it was a game for old men. But playing it has revealed to me that it’s the most active sport. You also get to meet a lot of prominent people, business people, the movers and shakers. I will appeal to dignitaries to come and play and tell my football colleagues that when they stop football, there is a second sport called golf. It’s very very active and since I started playing, I’ve enjoyed it,” Yegoala told 90 MINUTES.

Yeboah is also not just making up the numbers and like he did as a footballer, he has also chalked notable successes on the golf circuit. He explained: “So far so good since I started playing. I started with handicap 28 and now I’m in 11. It means that in 3 years, I’ve done very well so all the golfers are appreciating it but it’s all because of discipline. I’ve won the Asantehene Open Men Group B competition 3 times, I also won the scratch during last year’s Ghana Open in Kumasi and also the Accra Open once. So when you come to my house, you will find it difficult to differentiate between the football and golf trophies.”
