MTN FA CUP: AshantiGold determined to notch second FA Cup

AshantiGold are not looking back after years of trophy-less campaigns but are eager to win the MTN FA Cup, to replicate their title-winning era on the 90s.

The Miners, a major force in Ghana football two decades ago, have fallen short of their all-conquering form which saw them win three consecutive league titles - 1993 to 1996 - plus one FA Cup trophy in 1993.

However, the Obuasi side are now closer to another title, having reached their first FA Cup final in 19 years after beating Berekum Chelsea in Kumasi on Saturday in the semi-final clash.

Francis Kwofie scored the match winner in the 116th minute of extra-time to seal a 1-0 win for Yaw Acheampong's side.

Acheampong, who was captain when the Miners, then known as Obuasi Goldfields won their first FA Cup hopes to recreate that winning ambition in his team, this time as coach.

“As a player I won my first FA Cup title with the then Obuasi Goldfields where I was the skipper, so my dream now is to win now that I’m a coach of the team. I’m so happy because tactically the guys played to my instructions,” Acheampong told JOY Sports.

AshantiGold will now await the other semi-final winner which is yet to be confirmed as New Edubiase wait to play winner of the outstanding quarter-final between Wassaman United and Tema Youth FC.
