Upper West Region selects athletes for nation tournament in Sunyani

Wa, (U/W) Feb. 21, GNA - Ten athletes have been selected to represent the Upper West Region at this year's National Cross Country Athletics Tournament scheduled for Sunyani next week, February 26. The athletes comprising six men and four women were selected after a cross country contest involving 60 athletes from the Wa Municipal and Wa West District on Saturday.

The men covered a distance of 12 kilometres whilst the women made it over eight kilometres.

Cletus Amiziah breast the tape with a time of 42 minutes 42.5 seconds to take the first position followed by Nuobataatum at the second position with a time of 43 minutes, 11.07 seconds.

John Yirikye came third in a time of 43 minutes 12 seconds, Patrick Tegkyeba recorded 45 minutes 19 seconds to place fourth with Iddris Issahaque returning with a time of 45 minutes 43 second to occupy the fifth position while Shaibu Iddrisu made it with a time of 45 minutes 54 seconds for the sixth position.

In the women's division, Kpemoo Mariam raced to a record time of 35 minutes 03.9 seconds to take the first position with Mercy Saavim coming second with a time of 35 minutes 04 seconds. Regina Kpemlim-etme came third in a time of 35 minutes 45.48 seconds and Zuman Naalubul recorded 36 minutes 29.17 seconds to take the fourth position.

Mr Paul Hamit, Regional Athletics Coach encouraged those who competed in the exercise but could jot make the grade to continue to train harder in their communities not only to make it the next time round but to attract other young ones to join athletics. Mr Ahmed Iddrisu, Regional Sports Development Officer urged the selected athletes to focussed and be determined to win laurels at the tournament for the Region. 21 Feb. 10
