Swedish based striker earns Starlets Trials

In their bid to strengthen their team ahead of the FIFA World Youth tournament slated for Korea this August, officials of Ghana’s Under-17 soccer side, the Black Starlets, have extended invitation to Swedish based Ghanaian footballer, Kelvin Kojo Thompson for trials.

Thompson, who plays for Swedish second division side Segelspor, was born in Sweden is reported to be performing greatly in his Swedish club.

The Ghanaian, who arrives in the country on Sunday, 1st July, like Spain based Kingsley Boakye, is also reported to have been approached by Swedish football officials to change nationality in order to feature for that country, an issue that made Starlets official extend him the invitation for the trials.

However, an official of the Starlets team said in an interview that, the arrival of sixteen year-old Thompson will not warrant an automatic qualification into the Starlets team.

He said, the player will only get the nod to don the Ghana jersey if he is able to prove to the technical team that he has what it takes to be member of the squad since he is a Ghanaian.

The Black Starlets, who placed fourth in the African Youth Championship which was held at fellow West African country, Togo, has come under intense pressure after a dismal performance in that competition.
