Sunyani District Wins Cross-Country Race

Sunyani District made a clean sweep of this year's Brong Ahafo Inter-District Boys' 12 - kilometre cross-country race held at Dormaa-Ahenkro yesterday. Kumi Frimpong came first in 39 minutes 38.11 seconds, he was followed by Augustine Ferkah in 39 minutes 40.00 seconds and Yaw Acquah, Third in 39 minutes 41.00 seconds, all from Sunyani District. In the Girls' Six-Kilometre race, national athlete Gladys Adomah, also of Sunyani District won in 24 minutes 27.00 seconds. She was followed closely by Esther Afriyie of Wenchi District in 24 minutes 28.00 seconds while 29.00 seconds. But the runner who won the Hearts of the crowd was nine-year old Yaw Duvor of Sunyani district. He completed the race in 50 minute. Though young Duvor, a stage four pupil at the Sunyani Police Experimental Preparatory School finished 26th from the field of 30 runners, he was given a standing ovation and cash donation by the crowd for his bold effort. Mr. Isaac Kyeremeh, Dormaa District Chief Executive, who chaired the function, appealed to parents to encourage their children to take interest in sports and advised young Duvor to keep it up. Six out of the 13 Districts took part in the competition, organised to select a regional team for the February Four-Seven National Cross-Country race at Wa in the Upper West Region. The other participants were the Berekum, Tano and Dormaa Districts. Mr. William Karikari, Regional Sports Development Officer said six boys and four girls have been selected to start training on Wednesday, January 28 in Sunyani for the Wa competition.
