SSB gives ?40m to hockey tournament

THE Social Security Bank (SSB) Limited has voted a ?40m sponsorship package for the organisation of this year’s K. N Owusu Memorial Invitational Hockey Tournament.

The cheque covering the amount has been presented to the acting Chief Executive of the National Sports Council, Dr E. Owusu-Ansah, at a ceremony at the Accra Stadium.

Making the presentation, Mr Edmund Wereko-Brobbey, Liaison and Public Affairs Manager of SSB, explained that the gesture was in fulfilment of a pledge made by the bank in 1996, when it sponsored the inaugural tournament. He expressed the hope that the donation will go a long way to support the tournament in honour of their departed colleague.

He described the late K. N. Owusu as an astute sports administrator who, for many years, served as the chairman of the Ghana Hockey Association and also steered the Ghana Olympics Committee as President during the same period.

Mr Wereko-Brobbey also disclosed that K. N. Owusu was once the Managing Director of the SSB and the Ghana Commercial Bank, as well as Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board.

According to Dr Owusu-Ansah, it has always been the intention of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Council (NSC) to immortalise the name and achievements of the late K. N. Owusu since he was a role model.

He, therefore, pledged NSC’s total support in the collective efforts to immortalise this great sports administrator.

He revealed that K. N. Owusu was once the Vice President of the African Hockey Federation and President of the Veterans Hockey Club.
