Newmont sponsors Play Soccer team to Nairobi

Accra, Nov 30, GNA - 'Play Soccer' Ghana, a Non Governmental Organization formed with the purpose of educating children through soccer, last Tuesday left the shores of Ghana to participate in a five-aside soccer tournament in Nairobi Kenya. The team was sponsored by Newmont Ghana Limited and Interplast Ghana Limited.

The team, made up of eight players and two officials will be competing against Matara Youth Association of Kenya, winners of the 2006 Street Soccer World Cup staged in Germany and Search and Groom of Nigeria.

Briefing the media in Accra, Mr Charles Cobinna, Programme Director of 'Play Soccer' Ghana said the competition in Kenya forms part of their plans to use soccer to promote health and education in Ghana and the continent as a whole.

The Director said the Kenyan tournament will give the participants the needed exposure and experience to face the challenges of the future. Mr Cobbina said it is hoped that the experience and exposure gathered at the tournament will prepare the participants for future competitions after they failed to participate in the World Cup due to the refusal of the German Embassy to grant them visas. He expressed appreciation to Newmont Ghana Limited and Interplast Ghana Limited for sponsoring the trip.
