Hearts search for Akonnor replacement

Accra Hearts of Oak have begun to identify possible candidates to replace C.K. Akonnor following the coach's dismissal Wednesday evening.

Akonnor, who joined the Phobians 19 months ago was unable to win over the fans and management after three successive losses in five matches in this season's Glo Premier League and found himself languishing in thirteenth, way below rivals, Asante Kotoko.

While lots of names have been thrown around, the club's Board of Directors, who took the decision to axe the former Ghana captain after an emergency meeting says, negotiations will soon commence for the appointment of a new coach.

“The Chairman, with the support of the Board will open negotiations and appoint a new head coach to assume responsibility of the technical direction.

“Pending the appointment of the new coach, assistant coach Ben Adjei should take temporary charge,” a club statement said.

Akonnor's dismissal, largely attributed to fan power after their agitations for his removal succeeded has driven the Board of Directors to appeal for calm.

“Board has decided to take steps to revamp the Technical Team in due course to optimise efficiency. The Board also noted the disappointment and frustration of the club’s teeming fans with the performance of the club lately and appeal for patience and support for the team during this temporary setback.”

Hearts of Oak welcome Real Tamale United to Accra on Sunday as they begin life without Akonnor.
