ECOWAS Games: Ghana wins 4x400 men's gold

Team Ghana shrugged off stiff opposition from main rivals to win the 4x400 men’s gold on Tuesday at the ongoing Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Games in Accra.

The Ghanaians were a delight to watch as they displayed an output which thrilled the crowd at the El-Wak Stadium.

The quartet, made up of Ampem Kojo Tuffuor, John O’Brien, Daniel Gyasi and Collins Mensah lived up to billing by finishing the race at a time of 3:12:22secs, leaving the Nigerian team, consisted of Charles Ebelebe, Chukuwa Madunta, Promise Anosike and Abbas Abubakar to settle for silver with a time of 3:13:04secs.

Mali surprisingly placed third on 3:18:50secs with a team made up of Mabuku Damile, Jakariya Bamba, Amadou Kayantao and Adama Bagayoko.

In the women’s 4x400, Nigeria made amends by scooping gold at the expense of their Ghanaian counterparts.

The Nigerian quartet of Oladoye Funke, Osaze Rita, Nwuakwe Nkiru and Ibinose Isoken finished the race ahead of the Ghanaian team made up of Ruth Marfo, Adelaide Nkrumah, Happy Abruwah and Doreen Adjei to place second.

Sierra Leone grabbed bronze to improve their rankings at the Games.**
