Black Bombers To Pursue Olympic Dream In Morocco

The National Amateur Boxing Team, the Black Bombers will depart Ghana on Friday, 27th April, 2012 for Casablanca, Morocco to compete in the Africa Olympic Qualifier to be held from 28th April – 5th May, 2012.

With this Championship being the last opportunity for boxers from the African continent to qualify for the London 2012 Olympics, the competition is guaranteed to be fierce with 48 quota places available. There is a huge anticipation for this event with the quality expected to be at an all-time high. Some mouth-watering show downs will take place when the fierce competition for those life-changing quota places gets underway.

Mohammed the Fifth Sports Complex in Casablanca will be the venue for this explosive tournament where over 200 athletes are expected to compete. The following nine (9) boxers who just returned from a two-week international training camp in Azerbaijan are poised to represent the country:

Also travelling with the Team are Ambassador Ray Quarcoo, leader of delegation; Dominic Kankam, Secretary General; Asare Ofori, Coach; and Dr. Ken Aryeetey, Team Doctor.

The ongoing restructuring of the National Team which began a year ago has seen the Black Bombers develop following series of training programmes and tournaments put in place by the Federation. At this phase of the process, the Federation can envisage that if developmental and training programmes are sustained and supported by Government, the Ghana Olympic Committee and Corporate Ghana, the Nation would have a formidable squad for the 2013 World Boxing Championships, 2014 Commonwealth Games and beyond.

The Federation registers its appreciation to Mr. Dave Harper, Chief Executive Officer of Geodrill Company Limited and His Excellency Ambassador Ray Quarcoo, Goodwill Sports Ambassador – Ghana, through whose sponsorship/funding, the team has been able to embark on successful training programmes ahead of this crucial tournament.
