Arsenal move for Essien on loan

....Transfer window officially closes 23:00 BST
... Everton have loan bid for Essien rejected

The final day of the European transfer window has approached all of us, and Arsenal have been linked with a few more players, with Michael Essien the most interesting of them all

ARSENE WENGER will today try to take the Chelsea midfield ace on loan for the season. The Ghana star, 29, has been linked with an £8million switch from Stamford Bridge to Fenerbahce in Turkey.

But Arsenal boss Wenger will make an 11th hour intervention to give Essien the chance to stay in the capital.

Wenger, who had Chelsea’s Yossi Benayoun on loan last season, is looking for extra depth in midfield after the loss of Alex Song to Barcelona for £15m.

It is understood, Essien would prefer to stay in London and Chelsea would be willing to let go of their midfielder to Arsenal if the Gunners are willing to pay the player's entire salary for the season, believed to be £100,000 a week (158,000).

Essien has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, with Roberto Di Matteo preferring John Obi Mikel and Oriol Romeu to the Ghana international as his defensive midfield option.

Essien, in seven years at Chelsea, has made 163 outings and scored 17 goals.
