Otumfuo denies illicit affair with Kumawu queen mother

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has revealed that some individuals within the Ashanti Kingdom accused him of having an illicit affair with the queen mother of Kumawu during the chieftaincy dispute that erupted in the area.

According to him, people who lack basic understanding of how the Ashanti tradition works have tried in several ways to smear his reputation over the matter.

The Ashanti monarch has categorically denied the allegation.

Some sub-chiefs in Kumawu in the Ashanti recently threatened to break away from the Ashanti confederacy following some misunderstanding over who is the legitimate occupant of the stool in the area.

The three disgruntled kingmakers of the Kumawu Traditional Area have called the bluff of the Asantehene following their destoolment, which they described as arbitrary and without any effect.

Nana Akwasi Baffo II, Akwamuhene; Nana Sarfo Agyekum II, Aduanahene; and Nana Okyere Krapah, Akyempemhene said Otumfuo Osei Tutu had no customary right to de-stool any chief of Kumawu, since in their view, Asanteman is a confederate state.

The chiefs insist that the selection and installation of 47-year-old Dr Emmanuel Yaw Kantanka Sarfo-Asante as paramount chief of Kumawu fell short of due process and contravened established Asante customary practices and tradition.
