Excitement greets Bawumia’s discourse

There is a growing excitement over this year’s chapter of the annual Distinguished Speaker Series Public Lecture of the Central University College as the economy is set to come under the spotlight with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia doing the honours.

Since its inception four years ago, Dr. Bawumia, a visiting professor of Economic Governance of the tertiary institution and vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has added a feather to the series.

The announcements about the Tuesday, March 24, 2015 event, which have hit the public domain already, have especially whipped the excitement in most Ghanaians who seek answers to the myriad posers over the challenges facing the economy.

This year’s series could not have come at a better time now when Ghanaians are primed to audit Dr. Bawumia’s prediction that the seeming stability of the Cedi a few months ago was only temporary after the injection of some foreign exchange into the system by the Bank of Ghana.

A lot of economic developments have taken place since Dr. Bawumia’s last discourse which attracted expectedly a large turnout of audience from all walks of life, including academia.

Having been dubbed by many of his admirers as a ‘prophet of economics,’ his audience would be interested to learn about what fresh predictions he has for the country’s already stressed economy.

With an outstanding pedigree on the Bretton Wood institutions, the recent resort to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by Ghana for a bailout about which he predicted but which was denied, he is expected to dilate on the subject and its implications. This is what Ghanaians would want to hear so they can make informed decisions on the current state of the economy.

This year’s lecture is themed, “The IMF Bailout: Will the Anchor Hold?”

In his school days at the Tamale Secondary School, Dr. Bawumia was a member of the Debating Society where he carved a name for himself as one of its prominent members by virtue of his performance and appeal.

Prior to his debut in politics and his eventual choice as Nana Akufo-Addo’s running mate in the NPP in the previous elections and the forthcoming one, he was Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
