Video: 'Tonga' after all stands for a woman; official video out now

The official video for ‘Tonga’, one of Hiplife’s most controversial songs released in 2013 by Joey B featuring multiple awards winning rapper, Sarkodie, has finally been released.

The song which gained six nominations, earned Darryl Bannerman-Martin aka Joey B a car as the award for the New Artiste of the Year category at the 2013 Ghana Music Awards.

The new video shot in London was nothing close to the many choreographed dance videos released online by lovers of the song over the year. The video has a house party theme with no dance scenes but complemented by a bevy of ladies for Joey B and Sarkodie to adore.

Joey B in the video shared his admiration for a lady with starring guests including Donae’o, the ‘Party Hard’ fame, Fuse ODG, Ghana’s international pride, Dj Abrantee, Ghanaian radio presenter in the UK, and Eddie Kadi, UK Comedian and actor.

The video doesn’t meet the expectations of ‘Tonga’ fans who wanted to see a better concept than the ones created online with the song, considering the many months it took to release this video which was reportedly shot in July.

The song produced by Dj Breezy, gained a lot of negative public attention earlier in the year including rumours of it being banned as a result of its lyrics which seemed sexually explicit but figuratively crafted.

The artiste who is credited with songs including ‘Strawberry’, ‘Cigarette’ and the latest ‘Wave’ featuring Pappy Kojo had to explain what Tonga meant and how he came about it.

“‘Tonga’ simply stands for a woman. I wanted a catchy word for a female and I thought ‘Tonga’ could do the trick and it did catch the attention of Ghanaians. ‘Tonga’ is not what some people think it is. I can explain the lyrics of my song better to anyone who wants me to do that,” he said.
