Spokesperson of the Omanhene for the New Juaben Traditional Area, Baffour Nyantakyi Tutu Boateng says Daasebre Professor Emeritus Oti Boateng is still the Omanhene of the area contrary to claims by some sub-chiefs that the Daasebre had been destooled after they performed rituals to that effect.
About ten sub-chiefs were purported to have performed rituals to signal the destoolment of the Paramount chief of the area, Daasebre Professor Oti Boateng on Monday.
But speaking on Citi Eyewitness News, the Kontihene and spokesperson of the traditional area stated that “nobody has destooled Daasebre Professor Emeritus Oti Boateng, he is still the Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area’’.
According to him, it is only the Kingmakers of the area who can destool the Omanhene. “If there should be any destoolment in the New Juaben Traditional…; it is the divisional chiefs who can do such a thing. They [divisional chiefs] are in the majority and will the power to destool".
Baffour Nyantakyi Tutu Boateng said an Omanhene cannot be destooled by just any group of persons. “You cannot destool an Omanhene by staying in a certain house and slaughter a sheep and pour libation; you cannot do that.”
“Daasebre is still the Omanhene," he added.
Nana Tutu Boateng also demanded that the acts and rituals by the ten sub-chiefs be treated with the ‘highest contempt’ it deserves. “Those who are purported to have done [that] don’t have any authority, they don’t have any mandate of the New Juabengman council to do that.’’
“What they have done is against customs; they have even committed a crime under the chieftaincy act and they can be convicted of criminal offenses.’’
The Kontihene further stated that the sub-chiefs did not have the powers to destool an Omanhene.
He also disputed the claim that New Juaben is under security threat. “New Juaben is peaceful, there is no security threat in the area; everybody is going about the normal duties.’’
Meanwhile, spokesperson for the ten sub-chiefs, Nana Yaw Anor Boateng II, who is the Nseniehene, said Daasebre Oti Boateng is autocratic and punished dissenting views.
According to him, Daasebre Oti Boateng has taken the chiefs and people for granted. “He has decided to disrespect his own chiefs; he has disrespected the customs and traditions of the people…"
He disputed allegations that he and his group could face destoolment for their actions against Daasebre Oti Boateng. “The Omanhene has no locus to even destool any of us, neither has the traditional council," he added.
Yaw Anor Boateng II said the judicial power of the traditional council is willed by the judicial committee of the traditional council and not the Omanhene.
