Definitely, genetically modified foods should not be tolerated here in Ghana. That this has been allowed to pass in parliament is hardly surprising. Just a look at those people in parliament will tell you that even if some European criminal came and proposed that we should begin eating our dead, they would most happily consent.
In the article it was quoted that "....most Ghanaians are strongly opposed to" genetically modified foods. That statement cannot be true on the basis that even I myself, an avid follower of public affairs who lives in Accra, did not even know that this fraud was being perpetrated on the people of this country until I read about it in the news.
Now it is fact that most Ghanaians do not read the papers neither have they ever heard of what genetically modified food is, so how could they have fully known about it to reject it?

What they are trying to do is to cleverly eliminate us like they have done to the American Indians and Australian Aborigines and take over our land and resources and our political elite have as expected, become the conduit for this mass genocide.

It is really sad the our legislators should allow this to happen. Point is that the majority of them are ignorant and with little education to appreciate the concerns raised about the dangers posed by GM foods. The president should be lobbied to stop him giving his assent to the legislation passed by parliament. The Ghana Atomic Energy Agency should be well resourced and funded to increase their contribution to developing safer disease resistant crops and coming up with methods for avoiding post harvest loss.

What actually informed the decision of our Legislature to pass such a bill? Having posted this question, what promise was made to our government by the immoral imperialist multi-national companies to warrant the drafting and submission of such a diabolical bill? Are we as a nation absolutely conversant of the dangers of the consumption of GM foods to our organs and the dangers they pose to our ecosystem? The introduction of GM foods would eventually deleteriously alter our ecosystem, and we would be left for the worse. We should put on our thinking caps and stop buying into
the the deceptive arguments of the west.

You ask a million dollar question! "What actually informed the decision of our Legislature to pass such a bill?"
Here is a quote from our first Press Release which is very disturbing:
"Meanwhile, we reiterate our call for a moratorium on GM crops in Ghana. This call has even become more poignant as a result of comments coming from Members of Parliament indicating the level of the ignorance of our Parliamentarians who passed the Ghana Biosafety Act. For example, Mr. Maxwell Kofi Jumah, the Honourable Member of Parliament for Asokwa categorically stated during the Morning Show on Adom FM, hosted by Adakabre Frimpong Manso, on Thursday, 4th July 2013, that “Members of Parliament had no knowledge of biosafety, so on what grounds did they pass the Biosafety Act?” See: US Embassy Must Be Open And Transparent On GMO Debate In Ghana | Food Sovereignty Ghana :foodsovereigntyghana.org/us-embassy-must-be-open-and-transparent-on-gmo-debate-in-ghana/

GE Agriculture Is A Failed Technology!
There is a great need to renew our focus on food security and sovereignty. There is so much talk of late, as a result of the recent G8 Summit which had as its theme, “Global Agriculture and Food Security.”
"WASHINGTON, May 18, 2012 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- President Barack Obama, with G8 and African leaders, will convene today at a symposium hosted by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, to announce a new G8 initiative to advance agricultural development and food and nutrition security in Africa. The symposium, Advancing Food and Nutrition Security at the 2012 G8 Summit, will feature significant new business commitments for African agriculture and discussions on addressing hunger and poverty in the changing development landscape. "
[See: Global Leaders to Launch G8 Food Security Agenda at Chicago Council on Global Affairs Symposium - MarketWatch on.mktw.net/KUHPlN]
Speakers included the CEOs of Monsanto, Syngenta and Dupont but there are absolutely no speakers with agroecology or similar expertise.
Here are some of the corporate announcements:
Monsanto Announces $50 Million Commitment To African Agricultural Development At Symposium On Global Agriculture And Food Security...
This entire charade is not new. They have been pushing the same agenda under AGRA. Whatever is wrong with AGRA, is wrong with this new initiative. It is nothing but the same old agenda of selling Monsanto, or selling ourselves to Monsanto, or better still, being sold to Monsanto!
Why AGRA is the wrong path for African development
# It Lacks Transparency and Genuine Participation.
Although AGRA claims to be a farmer-led, African initiative, all of its institutional structures and decision-making processes were developed without consulting even with Africa’s largest farmer organizations and federations. AGRA’s definition of participation is highly limited, prompting one farm leader to confront AGRA saying,
“You come. You buy the land. You make a plan. You build a house. Now you ask me, what color do I want to paint the kitchen? This is not participation!”
# It Disempowers Farmers and Stifles Agroecological Innovation.
AGRA’s technical paradigm privileges the science of molecular biology and centers the locus of agricultural innovation in the laboratory under the direction of crop scientists. The science of agroecology—the science of sustainable agriculture decentralizes research, prioritizes farmer’s knowledge of their own agro-ecosystems. It begins in the field, not the laboratory.. Agriculture needs strong support for constant, widespread and decentralized agro-ecological in-
novation among farmers rather than depending on new seeds from a small cadre of experts.
# It Promotes a Failed Technology.
AGRA is simply the flagship project for a larger, industrial campaign for a Green Revolution based on the spread of genetically engineered crops. While AGRA is not directly distributing genetically engineered seeds in Africa, it is training the scientists and setting up the infrastructure for the spread of these crops.
Biotechnology has had dismal results in Africa in recent years. Field trials in Kenya showed Monsanto’s multi-million dollar virus-resistant sweet potato variety to be no less virus-resistant—and no more productive—than local varieties. Embarrassingly, conventional breeding in Uganda produced a more effective and higher-yielding, virus-resistant sweet potato.8 In another example of spectacular failure, three varieties of Monsanto’s GM maize failed to produce crops during the 2008/9 growing season in South Africa, leaving as many as 200,000 hectares of cornfields barren, as well as crop losses across several provinces.
Monsanto compensated commercial farmers who lost their yield and barred them from speaking out publicly.9 The Australian government’s Grains Research and Development Corporation found that in normal years, “drought-resistant” GMO seeds produce less than local varieties.10 These GMO seeds will never be able to cover the diversity of crops grown by farmers, nor resist the wide range of hazards they will confront with climate change. Building climate resilience into farming requires an integrated, agroecosystem approach.
# It Ignores the Root Causes of Hunger.
Dominic Glover of the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex writes that biotechnology promoters: “imply GM can magic away the problems facing poor farmers without addressing the complex and intractable issues of poverty, land rights, lack of access to credit and weak extension services.”6 A 2008 report by the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD)—a joint initiative of the World Bank, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and others—found that the real solution to hunger was not to be found in technological fixes such as GM seeds, but rather in equitable distribution of resources and support for ecological and traditional agriculture.7
# It Will Push Poor Farmers out of Agriculture.
AGRA will follow market-driven development strategies designed to open Africa’s smallholder sector to the volatile world market where they must compete with developed countries’ subsidized agriculture. This pushes the “least efficient” African farmers out of agriculture invariably leading to greater land concentration and rural flight, euphemistically referred to by AGRA as “land mobility”.
# It Promotes an Ecologically Unsustainable Model.
The promotion of high-input farming threatens to move Africa away from sustainable farming methods, deplete Africa’s soils and biodiversity and erode the traditional and agroecological knowledge base of small farmers. A study called Organic Agriculture and Food Security in Africa released in 2008 by the UN Conference on Trade and Development together with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP-UNCTAD) found that a mix of traditional and modern organic farming — now extensively practiced in Africa—better addressed food security.
The study also found that production actually increased while minimizing or eliminating the use of chemical inputs, reducing soil erosion, increasing water retention and bringing the water table closer to the surface.11

We seem to have forgotten President Obama invited the late President Mills (with his ministers), and 3 other African Presidents to a G20 meeting where Mills was "given" $75 million (probably donated by the GMO's Monsanto and Cargill CEO's who were present)to come and introduce GM seeds into our food chain. Like the Vodafone sale, maybe members of Parliament got their share of the $75 mil. and passed the biodiversity law.
After all a Black (half African)President doesn't mind selling us, just as our chiefs sold some of our ancestor brothers and sisters to the white man in the 15th century. For whatever reasons our President Mahama and his ministers seem to be "giving away" our assets to the Chinese with little returns to Ghana. OH AFRICANS!! WE'RE STILL "SELLING" EACH OTHER TO THE WHITEMAN!!
