Bimobas to fight poverty using Danjuar festival

The chiefs and people of Bimoba in the Upper East Region are taking advantage of the annual Danjuar festival to forge unity of purpose in the fight against abject poverty, ignorance, diseases and under-development.

Mr Sundana Sundiata Laari, Secretary of Danjuar Festival Planning Committee made this known to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday, ahead of the climax of the festival on Saturday, February 23.

He said: “The rapid scientific advancement and information communication technology eating into the fabrics of every community have made it imperative for Bimobas to unite to fight the evil of abject poverty bedeviling the people for centuries.”

Mr Laari said the main idea behind the celebration of the festival was to promote peace, encourage oneness and hardwork, particularly among the youth, to direct their energies to the development of the area.

Bimoba communities lack basic amenities such as good roads, potable water, school infrastructure and quality health centre.

Mr Laari expressed the hope that the festival would serve as a platform to facilitate the implementation of such projects.

He noted that the area is full of energetic youth and arable land that could be exploited to boost agricultural productivity.

Mr Laari called on government, non-governmental organisations as well as public-spirited individuals, to take advantage of the investment opportunities in the area.

He noted that the Danjuar festival is a good platform to promote the tourist potentials of the area.

The Danjuar festival is celebrated annually to remember the sacrifices of the ancestors, thank God for a successful farming season and to seek divine intervention for better years ahead.

The theme for this year’s celebration is: “Using festivals to promote Peace, Unity and Development, the role of Danjuar.”

Kpikpira, a farming community located at the eastern part of Garu in the Garu-Tempane District of the Region would be the main centre of focus for the revellers.
