Nkrumah statue not a priority – Sekou tells gov’t

Dr. Sekou Nkrumah says government should not use his father’s centenary celebration to divert attention from the current water and electricity crisis.

President Mahama on Tuesday announced that the government has submitted proposals for the amendment of the Holidays Act, to make the birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah a statutory holiday.

He also said an imposing statue of Dr. Nkrumah will be mounted at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra to immortalize his memory.

But the third son of Dr Kwame Nkrumah in an interview with XYZ News said the government must focus on solving the current power and water crisis rather than wasting resources on building statues.

“We are in a country today where people are struggling with basic needs which I think is unacceptable and that are where the focus of government should be.

"There are a lot of statues of Nkrumah so why are we overplaying that…Putting up a statue at Nkrumah Circle is not a priority and basic things like electricity and water are the things that need to be provided for the people,” Dr. Nkrumah said.
