UG students cancel demo over Okponglo accidents

Students of the University of Ghana have cancelled a planned demonstration over the spate of road accidents at the Okponglo junction of the legon-madina highway which also serves as the temporary entrance to the university.

Instead, they will send a strongly-worded message to the Ministry of Roads and Highways to do something about the danger posed to students on that road.

Three students have lost their lives within a week on that part of the road.

A level one hundred male medical student was knocked down and killed on Friday; exactly a week after two female students also lost their lives at the same spot.

The students believe the relocation of the university entrance to the Okponglo junction because of the current road construction is a major cause of the accidents.

Speaking to XYZ News, SRC President Edmund Kombat said the relocation has put more pressure on that part of the road.

They want the Ministry of Roads and Highways to expedite action on the road construction so the entrance could be returned to its original location.
