Kofi Wayo Is Loyal – Dan Botwe

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mr. Dan Botwe has said that in spite of Mr. Kofi Wayo’s critical attitude toward the government; the party does not see him as a disloyal member.

Mr. Botwe said “His actions are certainly uncomfortable, certainly despicable but he is going against the government and not the party”. He was speaking with journalists during a press conference to usher in the party’s tenth year anniversary. He said because Mr. Kofi Wayo is attacking government and its officials and not the party, “it is difficult to deal with him at party level. He added that, “Kofi Wayo’s actions are certainly despicable but the difficulty is whether we will be able to take action against him based on our clearly stated grievance procedure in our constitution”.

Mr. Botwe said any action taken in dealing with him should be placed in a broader political context to see what the party could lose or achieve. He said the party has to consider so many options in dealing with him. He said, “My assessment is that he seems to be treading on a careful and calculated line of approach and that is the difference between the party and the government”. According to the General Secretary, it has been difficult to deal with Mr. Wayo because nobody has brought a petition against him.

He However said that “the most important thing is to take an action which is politically correct.” He said the Council of Elders have talked to Mr. Wayo hence the positive difference in his approach to things of late adding that, “I think you can assess that he is toning down now,” he said. He said the party had been able to get him to modify his language without causing another problem, adding “we should be very careful that we don’t make a cheap martyr out of him.”
