Free SHS must be implemented judiciously - Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama is cautioning electorates against the free Senior High School promise of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the December polls.

According to the President, the free SHS promise is a careless campaign message meant only for the purpose of votes in the December polls.

President Mahama made the comments last night when he addressed rally at Hwediem in the Asutifi South of the Brong Ahafo region as part of his campaign tour of the region.

The president says must concentrate rather on expanding and improving the quality of schools in order to make the universality of education espoused by the constitution possible.

He said the constitution already provides that governments are supposed to make education progressively free as and when the resources of the nation can cover the cost.

President Mahama therefore indicated that such policy decisions must not be made on the whim of an individual and that it must be borne out of a judicious analysis of the situation in order not to injure the quality of education.

He said another NDC government will expand access and boost the quality of education because that is the only way people can have opportunities in life, adding “it is only when you have a good quality education that you profit from it.”

He slammed the opposition NPP for quickly changing its campaign mantra of "Free SHS" to "Free Quality SHS" only after the NDC made quality education its focal point.
