A suspect in the custody of the Buffalo Unit of the Ghana Police Service in Kumasi has died after stabbing himself on Saturday.
Police officials say Yaw Boakye, 25, stabbed himself with a broken piece of louvre blade at the charge office.
He was arrested on Saturday at the Suame Cemetery while transporting lorry tyres rims in a taxi cab he hijacked at Tafo in the Ashanti Region.
Police Buffalo Unit Commander, DSP Joseph Nyaaba, told Luv News a taxi driver and a scrap dealer suspected to be recipients of the stolen rims were arrested and granted bail.
He said Yaw Boakye had earlier escaped from lawful custody but was rearrested, and while he was being processed for cells, with additional charge of escaping from lawful custody, he broke a louvre blade and stabbed himself in the stomach.
“We rushed him to Komfo Anokye [Teaching Hospital] for an emergency, the doctors tried but this morning he lost his life. He may be a drug addict.”
