Ursula Seeks To Unseat Fritz Baffour

The battle lines are drawn and Ursula Owusu, a Lawyer of international repute, has officially launched her campaign to contest for the seat of Ablekuma South in the Greater Accra Region in the 2012 general elections on the ticket of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Although Ursula, as she is popularly called, is contesting the seat with about four other contestants the Vice President of the International federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), told The New Crusading GUIDE that “my target is to beat Hon. Fritz Baffour convincingly and also help increase the total number of votes our Presidential candidate (Nana Akufo Addo) had in the 2008 elections”.

Launching her campaign last Saturday at the Constituency office at Mamprobi, she accused the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Fritz Baffour, of doing very little to help develop the constituency. “The NDC promised a Better Ghana but we are not seeing anything. They simply cannot perform. I am winning this seat back for the NPP”, she reiterated.

Among the NPP stalwarts who joined her campaign launch were Dr. Nyaho Nyaho- Tamakloe, a Founding Member of the party and Gloria Akuffu, a former Deputy Attorney-General. The MP for Oda and the Executives of Oda constituency were also at the launch to throw their weight behind Ursula whom they regard as their “precious stone”.
Quizzed as to whether she has a big challenge in the incumbent MP, Frits Baffour since he commanded a lot of support in the political arena, Ursula said “ I am not sure about Fritz commanding a lot of support in the political arena and I think he knows my worth since we have been on several platforms and he knows that I will give him a good run for his money”, adding that even within the NDC, it will be difficult for him (Fritz) but “that’s not my business… meredi mefie asem”, to wit (“ I am minding my own business”).
However, the incumbent MP, Fritz Baffour when contacted, told The New Crusading GUIDE that, “the issue is not about Ursula and Fritz Baffour, it is about Ursula winning her primaries so she should concentrate on it. I have two years out of my mandate to serve my people and that is my focus”.
Asked whether he will seek re-election, the ace entertainer cum politician answered “that is my private decision”.

A believer of the tenets of NPP’s vision of ‘Development in Freedom’, Ursula Owusu, who joined the party in 1992 had been an active member of the party’s communications team for the 2004 and 2008 elections as well as the upcoming elections in 2012.

She had served in different capacities at different levels within the party and was made a National Patron of the Party in 2010 as well as a patron of the Akim Oda, Adenta and Takoradi Constituencies. Ursula, until declaring her intention to contest, was also a member of the NPP’s Communication Team.
Ursula has helped in various diverse ways including payment of rent for the party office, legal assistance to executives and members of the constituency, financial assistance for the conduct of polling station and other constituency elections.

In addition, she has donated 200 plastic chairs, 2 motor bikes, a printer/scanner/copier machines, and contributed to constituency welfare scheme.
Later, loud sounds of the brass-band, escorted Ms. Ursula Owusu to submit her completed nomination forms at the Constituency office.
