Majid Michel, one of Ghana’s brightest movie stars said that, acting has been his childhood dream. And he is happy it has come to pass.
The star who has appeared in close to twenty movies had his first major acting role in the popular television series, Things We Do for Love.
That chanced opportunity came through a model (a neighbour) who asked him if he could or would like to act. His 'Yes!' response was almost instantaneous.
Majid has moved on from his first TV role into acting full time acting and does television productions too.
Touching on the state of the Ghanaian movie scene, he said Ghanaian movies are now living up to standard and people are accepting them. He said Ghanaian movies are now rated as one of the best in the sub-region.
Among others, Majid starred the highly entertaining movies ‘Agony of the Christ’, ‘Shakira’ and a yet to be released ‘Heart of Men’ which has already got the public talking.
‘Heart of Men’ has been criticised for its ‘porn’ content. It has incurred the wrath of many a movie fan for 'preaching profanity and not portraying our life style and culture'.
Majid disagrees though; “I don’t see ‘Heart of Men’ as porn, its normal. What is the porn in it?”
“If it disturbs you, don’t buy it. It’s your choice. It is one of my best movies,” he added.
The movie has been rated 18, but some of the concerns have been about who enforces the law to prevent people younger than 18 from watching it. A lot of people believe it is a grey area.
Reacting to that assertion, Majid said “There are thousands of movies coming out of the US and UK which are rated 18 and has more serious porn in it and the young kids watch it here. The age 18 check is not enforced.”
He urged Ghanaians to follow the story line of the movie when it premiers later this year and they will see that there is more to the movie than what they claim is ‘porn’.
He recounted that one of the challenging roles he has played so far was in the movie ‘Agony of the Christ’ which earned him an African Movie Academy Award (AMAA) nomination.
He recently picked up an award for Best Actor in his role in the movie ‘Play Boy’. The award was given to him at the 5th edition of Five Continents Awards organised by Haitians at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in the United States of America.
Majid says his wife understands his job so she does not have any problem with the roles he plays. “She sometimes rehearses with me and my roles do not surprise her because she knows all my scripts and what my roles are.”
He revealed that, he is currently casting in a movie called ‘A sting in a tail’ which is being produced by Shirley Frimpong Manso of Sparrow Productions.
The movie will be premiered on November 6 and he has tagged that to be in the list of his best movies.
