Executive Director of Africa Legal Aid, Madam Evelyn Ankomah says the ‘Diplomatic Sex Scandal’ story in the March 20 edition of the New Weekend Crusading Guide newspaper is simply an attempt to tarnish her image. According to her the story smacks of “blackmail, an attempt to extort funds” from her through various acts of vigilantism. The woman in the centre of the sex scandal notes that the New Weekend Crusading Guide and its investigative reporter, Anas Aremeyaw Anas are part of a grand ploy by the landlady to push out Working Girl Wellness Centre from her premises.
The March 20 edition of the New Weekend Crusading Guide newspaper reported the perpetuation of lewd acts of pornography and other sexual acts in the Working Girl Wellness Centre, a Ghanaian Spa and wellness centre in Accra. The report alleges that Madame Evelyn Ankomah, who has been given Diplomatic status by the Government of Ghana, is one of two persons behind the Working Girl Wellness Centre where the “morbid act” took place. It reports that Madame Evelyn Ankomah, who is also the Head of the Africa Legal Aid, signed the lease for the use of the premises. In an interview with Citi News Madame Ankomah confirmed she was indeed one of the brains behind the establishment of the Spa noting that it was merely a hobby.
She revealed that in 2005, after extensive consultation with the owner –also a friend, landlady of the Labone Coffee Shop, Mrs. Baaba Obeng, an agreement was reached stating that part of the coffee shop was to be used for the Wellness centre. She added however that she was forced to keep her distance for the centre because of a headquarters agreement reached between the Government of Ghana and Africa Legal Aid. Madame Ankomah stated that some weeks ago, an unnamed female hinted her of the possible publication of defamatory material in the print media for unconfirmed reasons. She suspected however that the actions of Mrs. Obeng, which had taken escalating proportions, were due to a misunderstanding between Mrs. Obeng and some workers at the Spa.
She pointed out that she had been contacted by investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas on the issue but noted that she referred him to Mr Jake Acquah Sampong and Andrew Mercer following a court case filed by Mrs. Obeng against Working Girl Wellness Centre. Madame Ankomah questioned the basis of an eviction notice obtained from the courts and added that the lawyer for Mrs. Obeng, Mr. Egbert Fable, had revealed to her of some questionable actions he had been instructed to take. She hinted that on advice of her legal council she would sue the New Weekend Crusading Guide newspaper and the reporter who broke the story, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Mrs Baaba Obeng when contacted however refused to comment on the matter. Anas Aremeyaw on his part however says he stands by his story despite threats of the court action against him. A staff of the centre by name Hannah who was mentioned as being involved in the sexual acts refuted all allegations of her involvement saying “I have never ever done anything of that sort”. She noted the rumor of such acts had been circulating for some time and recounted an experience where a client had abused a worker in an effort to solicit some sexual favour. She mentioned that some Police personnel and some ‘macho men’ had been given access into the office building on March 20 by the owner, Mrs. Obeng for unknown reasons.
