Akufo-Addo pledges to develop Takoradi Port

Takoradi Nov.14, -GNA-Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Friday said an NPP government under his leadership would transform the Takoradi Port into a major modern port in West Africa.

He was addressing a cross-section of workers at the Takoradi Port and the 2006/2007 Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA) Best Worker Awards Day at Takoradi as part of his two-day campaign tour of the Southern Part of the Western Region.

Nana Akufo-Addo said already, limited upgrading of facilities haD taken place at the port and the facilities would be further enhanced to turn the Port into a commercial, export-oriented and oil terminal port. He said feasibility studies on the expansion and modernisation of the Port had been completed and the management is studying the report and would come out with recommendations.

He said it is essential that oil exploited in the region is exported through the Port rather than through Cote d' Ivoire and other neighbouring countries.

He added that, the expansion and the modernization programme would re-vitalise the Port and create more jobs, adding that creation of jobs and wealth would be some of the targets of his government. Nana Akufo-Addo said the cooperation and support of workers at the Port is needed to achieve these objectives and put more money into the pockets of the people.

He said workers also have to give of their best to support the government to lift the socio-economic development of the country to a higher level and to assist to make the nation a country of excellence.
