Eclipse: Ghana's total eclipse live on Internet

One will be able to view the total solar eclipse in Ghana on Wednesday via the Internet.

Scientists from the University of Cape Coast in collaboration with experts from the South Africa Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), would capture and stream the eclipse live on the internet website africlipse.csir.co.za as part of a CSIR knowledge dissemination drive.

Recordings of the phenomenon - made via a telescope with a Sony DV camera and two additional webcams - would be available on the website for later viewing.

The eclipse will last about three minutes and will be shown at the following time

  • 9am Accra, Ghana (GMT)
  • 10 am London, England, U.K (BST)
  • 11 am Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany
  • 12 noon: Helsinki, Finland
  • 4 am Toronto, Ontario, Canada
  • 1 am San Francisco, California (PST)
  • 11 am South African time
  • 4 am Washington DC, District of Columbia, U.S.A

The eclipse's path across Africa starts at coast of Ghana, and passes through several countries in a north-easterly direction, including Libya.
The CSIR said the only limiting factor in the quality of the broadcast could be Ghana's bandwidth capability.
"The worst-case scenario would be transmission that will be delayed by a few minutes," it said.
