What Took Sekou Nkrumah Too Long?

Ask Nana Kow Blankson

The last time I checked, Dr. Sekou Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s First President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, does not bring anything credible to the political table or at best the country’s political gallery. In fact the guy does not even have a constituency let alone a following and had it not been for the fact that he is the son of Dr. Nkrumah, I don’t think anybody would have taken him serious in this country.

But because Sekou has been going to radio and television stations to emit garbage, Sekou believes he has arrived or can be counted as a political heavyweight with clout in this country. If just going on radio stations to make contributions is the only measuring standard to qualify a person as a political heavyweight, all serial callers would have been counted by now.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is known to have four kids until recently when a certain man, Dr. Onsy Anwar Nathan Kwame Nkrumah surfaced and informed Ghanaians that he is also a son of Dr. Nkrumah. But among the Nkrumah’s five children, if they decide today to vote for a spokesperson of the children, I don’t even think Sekou can even vote for himself. The guy is simply a bundle of nerves, and seems not to know what he wants which is why he has become a wafer being blown around by the wind.

Anybody who has been following Sekou will agree with me that the guy seems to be battling some demons. And he may also be chasing the political prostitute-in-chief title with Frances Essiam, which is why the two of them keep changing parties.

Sekou has been battling his own siblings on the father’s legacy even though he is not a member of the CPP. He is known for bashing his own sister, Samia Nkrumah, the CPP National Chairman on issues bothering the CPP when he is not a card bearing member of the party formed by his late dad.

Sekou Nkrumah who has been craving for attention and respect ever since he finally settled in Ghana joined the NDC. Therefore, when the NDC came into power in 2009, he was appointed Acting National Youth Coordinator. But Sekou, who hardly stayed in his office to work, was often heard on radio stations belittling President Mills and calling his leadership style into question.

Sekou made some disparaging comments when he said in an interview last year that President Mills lacks charisma, dynamism and strong will to lead Ghana. He was also reported as saying that Jerry John Rawlings is Ghana’s best leader, compared to ex-president Kufour and President Mills.

Things came to a head when Sekou who seems not to know how to use his acidic tongue was given the marching orders from his job. But immediately Sekou was dismissed he continued lambasting President Mills and pledged to work in denying him a second term. This amply demonstrated that Sekou was indeed peeved with the dismissal from his job and eventually left the NDC.

It was last year, many months ago that Sekou told the whole world that he was joining the NPP and would be campaigning for Nana Akufo-Addo to defeat President Mills in the 2012 elections. Therefore, last week’s news that Sekou has finally joined the NPP and has declared his intention of campaigning for Akufo-Addo is no news at all.

Sekou Nkrumah is known to have no following in this country. And because he normally talks before processing the effects, many Ghanaians do not take him serious and his views to the bank. Nobody seems to care a hoot about what he says and does.

Therefore, Sekou’s so-called announcement of joining the NPP and Akufo-Addo’s campaign does not lead to any political kismet to Akufo-Addo. In fact, he even took too long in joining the NPP. If Sekou believes he is a political heavyweight I goad him to stand for a political office to test his so-called assumed popularity. He will fail miserably, because nobody listens to him. It is good that Sekou has followed his competitor-in-chief Frances Essiam to the NPP. Since both of them are now in the same party it would rather make the competition even very keen.
