WAEC releases WASSCE results

Accra, Oct. 31, GNA - The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) announced on Tuesday that it has released the provisional results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for May and June 2006.

A statement signed in Accra by Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, Senior Public Relations Officer, said the results had been dispatched to schools and advised candidates to contact their various schools and not the offices of WAEC for their results. Candidates can also access their results online. It said out of a total of 121,175 candidates from 534 schools, 34,516 (28%) passed in eight subjects; 24,391 (20%) passed in seven subjects 15,702 (13%) passed in six subjects; 11,794 (10%) passed in five subjects; 8,444 (7%) passed in four subjects; 6,169 (5%) passed in three subjects; 4,425 (4%) passed in two subjects and 3,182 (3%) passed in one subjects A total of 1,691 (one per cent) failed in all subjects while 561 candidates were absent.

It said several cases of examination malpractices were recorded during the conduct of the May and June 2006 WASSCE as a result of poor supervision and invigilation.

It said that 5,394 candidates had their subject results cancelled, while 19 candidates had their entire results cancelled. It said two candidates who had their results cancelled had been barred from taking any examination conducted by the council for two years.

The statement said 24 schools had been de-recognized for two years for poor supervision and invigilation. The statement said the entire results of 10,278 candidates had been withheld pending the conclusion of investigations into various irregularities. 31 Oct. 06
