Two Melcom drivers in court for stealing

Two drivers of Melcom Trading Company Limited who stole the company’s products and hid them in a room and reported that they had been robbed by armed men on Tuesday appeared before a Circuit Court in Accra.

Philip Yamoah Mensah and Michael Boateng Yeboah, who have been charged with conspiracy and stealing, have pleaded not guilty.

The court presided over by Mr. Ebenezer Osei-Darko admitted the drivers to bail in the sum of GHC 20,000.00 with two sureties each to be justified. They are to reappear on November 27.

Chief Inspector Adamu M. Awal told the court that the complainant was a transport officer of Melcom Trading Company Limited located at Industrial area in Accra.

Chief Inspector Awal said as drivers of the company, they were normally engaged to distribute the company’s products, including deep freezers, refrigerators and blenders among others to other branches of the company across the country.

In August this year, the two accused persons conspired to steal the company’s products.

Chief Inspector Awal said on August 21, this year, Yamoah Mensah took charge of the company’s truck with registration number GE 2036 W with the items mentioned above to be delivered at Hohoe in the Volta Region.

Yamoah Mensah drove the vehicle to Boateng Yeboah’s house at Pokuase in Accra and offloaded the goods.

The two drivers went to Afienya and dumped the vehicle in the bush, after that, Yamoah Mensah went to the Afienya Police Station and reported that armed robbers had attacked him and bolted away with the vehicle and its content.

On September 9, this year, the Amasaman Police had a tip off and Yamoah Mensah was picked up and when his room was searched, majority of the items were found in his room.

Chief Inspector Awal said Yamoah Mensah mentioned Boateng Yeboah as his accomplice and he was also picked up by the police. During a search in Boateng Yeboah’s room, some of the stolen items were found in his room and they were retrieved.
