Rawlings congratulates Muslims

Accra, Sept 30, GNA - Former President Jerry John Rawlings on Tuesday congratulated Muslims on the occasion of Eid ul Fitr and said the message from all Muslim leaders should be that of peace and unity. "We need to reflect and seek Allah's guidance as we draw close to the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary election. We should preach against violence and caution our youth not to become vessels of evil politicians," he said in a statement. Former President Rawlings said the sacrifices they made during the month-long fasting period cannot be for nothing and that the end result should be peace and tranquility for Ghana. He said the fasting period was a time of great sacrifice, fasting, alms giving and prayers and "this goes to protect us al" and the acts of kindness should not be forgotten once they conclude today's celebrations.

Former President Rawlings said as they celebrate they should not forget the Koranic admonishment not to over-indulge. They need to exhibit the virtues of patience, sacrifice and humility that are the hallmarks of the fasting process - Ramadan. "We have to remember that as a country we are saddled with myriad social and economic problems. It is thus imperative that we pray to Allah to guide Ghana through these trying moments," he said.
