Public warned against purchase of PETTI tomato

Accra, Aug. 31, GNA - The Food and Drugs (FDB), on Wednesday warned the public not to purchase an unwholesome tinned tomato with the brand name, PETTI.

A statement signed by Mr E.K Agyarko, Chief Executive of the FDB said it was investigating a case of dumping of the tinned tomato with specifications stating its country of origin as Italy.

It has a batch number as B056 and pack size as 400g.

An unspecified quantity of the tomato, which stated that it should be consumed before 02-2006, was said had been buried at a site near the Achimota School and "this has been exhumed, scavenged and brought into trade."

The statement said the product was rusty and had discoloured external parts with bloated and leaking ends.

"In the meantime, investigations are continuing to identify the company-importer or distributor who did the dumping at the said site," the statement said It welcomed any information from the general public on the issue.
