President Kufuor leaves for US

...he'll be away for 2 weeks
Accra, Sept. 12, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor left Accra Thursday evening for a three-day visit to the United States at the invitation of President George Bush.

A statement signed by Mr Andrew Awuni, Press Secretary and Presidential Spokesperson, said the visit was the second by an African leader in the eight year-term of President Bush. He said the visit would further deepened Ghana-US partnership and strengthen their commitment to promote peace and prosperity in Africa and the world at large.

Discussions would be on issues relating to malaria and the neglect of tropical disease prevention, the statement said. Subsequent to the visit, President Kufuor will attend the 63rd General Assembly of the United Nations in New York, scheduled to begin on September 23, where he is expected to deliver a key farewell speech.

The statement noted that since 2001, President Kufuor has participated in all but one of the UN General Assembly sessions. At the airport to see off the President were Vice President Aliu Mahama, Ministers of State, the Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General J.B Danquah and Inspector General of Police and Patrick Acheampong.
