Politics is a Dirty Game - Ex-Mayor

The former Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan assembly, Nana Akwasi Agyemang says politics is tiresome and a dirty game, which allows even lunatics to castigate noblemen like him.

Therefore, with the exit of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from power, he would no longer dabble in politics. However he is prepared to serve the nation, he added.

Nana Akwasi Agyemang who until the defeat of the NDC last December was a special government envoy said he is quitting politics after 23 years.

He said he had served with various governments, namely the National Liberation Council I, National Liberation Council II, Peoples National Party, People's National Defence Council and NDC.

Agyemang said in spite of his rich experience coupled with efforts that have seen a speedy growth in Kumasi, people always used political issues to discredit him.

He pointed out that during his tenure of office as a Mayor, he lost weight because of official pressure and tension that were put on him. "Now I am free and living peacefully, devoid of attacks and other insinuations, Agyemang said Sunday, June 22.

The former Mayor who appears relaxed and full of vigour refused to comment on any socio-political issues in the country. He was however resolute about his conviction to shun politics.

Nana Akwasi Agyemang who goes by the accolade "Okumkom" because of his philanthropist gestures took the opportunity to deny recent newspapers reports that he is ready to serve in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

He said though he is not anti NPP and has nothing against the President, there comes a time in a man's life when he has to throw in the towel for others to continue the task of nation building.

He also denied allegations that he is inciting some NDC assembly members against the new KMA boss, Maxwell Kofi Gyimah.

Agyemang said they were total lies and fabrications orchestrated by his detractor to paint him black.

"How can I incite somebody against Gyimah whose appointment was politically endorsed by the government, and what benefit would I drive from Gyimah's dismissal since I have no hand in NPP government? he asked.

According to the former KMA boss since NDC lost power, he has never entertained any assemblyman at his residence.

He called on well meaning Ghanaians to pray for the survival of NPP government instead of dabbling in vain and negative things that could divide the society.
