Police arrest six suspected drug peddlers in a swoop at Tarkwa

The Sekondi Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Police Service on Wednesday undertook a Police swoop at Tarkwa railway area, arresting six drug peddlers in the process.

The Police arrested five males and one female. They are Agnes Andoh, 42; Nicolas Ntamah, 19 with 68 wrappers of Indian hemp; James Obeng, 23 with 31 wrappers and three compressed parcels of “Wee”; Ekow Ankomah, 24, with 15 wrappers and quantities of Indian Hemp; Amadu Yaya, 50, and Akwasi Danso, 23.

The Unit Commander of the Sekondi Drug Law Enforcement Unit, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr. Anthony Dogbey told the Ghana News Agency in Sekondi.

He said the Police for sometime had been receiving reports from Tarkwa that some “wee smokers” had created ghettos at Tarkwa railway area, harassing residents at night and dawn snatching people’s mobile phones, bags and other valuables.

ASP Dogbey said the Police mobilized their personnel and stormed the place around 0500 hours on Wednesday 4, and arrested the suspects while some managed to escape.

The Unit Commander indicated that the Police had burnt down the ghettos and would continue to track down drug peddlers that were harassing people in the various communities.

He entreated the public to continue giving vital information to the Police to assist them in their investigations as well as to help eliminate crime in society.

ASP Dogbey advised parents to pay attention to their wards and always admonish them against engaging in drugs since it could land them into trouble or addiction.

The Police said those arrested would be put before court tomorrow after screening, while investigations continue to track down those who escaped.**
