NPP Petition Amendment Will Not Change the Nature of the Case - Mike Oquaye

Former Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye has indicated that Nana Addo and Co’s amendment to the election petition filed at the Supreme Court will not change the nature of the substantive case.

The petitioners on Thursday amended their petition because they had found what they described as more electoral malpractices that characterized the 2012 general elections.

They have therefore asked for the results of 11,916 stations to be annulled instead of the 4,709 in the original petition.

Scores of people have wondered what the implications of the latest twist to the petition filed will look like.

But Professor Mike Oquaye has allayed their fears saying, “In fact, this issue is basically one of documentary evidence and once more evidence come out from your search it is allowable to add that as well to give the full picture, so it is a way of giving notice seeking permission to amend by addition and that can be done any day and it is important to do it so that the other parties can also be put on notice as to what exactly you want to do.”

He further explained, “It doesn’t change the nature, import and the essential parameters, it wouldn’t change anything, it is purely a matter of numbers increased from let’s say 100 to 120.”
