Mills’ Government Has Proved Incompetence ....

... with the Shortage of Gas

By Alex Bossman Baafi

The president, John Evans Mills on numberless occasions had reiterated that the purpose for him be in government is to improve upon the living conditions of the people. This in my humble opinion cannot be traced anywhere near the actions and inaction of the president and his team.

Evidence abounds that the vast majority of the good people of this country are really struggling with severe economic hardship under the leadership of the president and his corrupt NDC government. Since this Mills – Mahamma led government took off in January 2009, there had not been conscious and consistent efforts to work harder to improve the living standards of our people by initiating policies tailored towards a reduction of poverty, diseases and underdevelopment. I am not saying that poverty will disappear overnight, but poverty reduction is not an issue to be fought with kid’s gloves as the government has not shown any seriousness with urgency to encourage his team to work harder to turn things around for the betterment of the country.

Mills’ government has failed consistently to realise that one of the key drivers of our national economy is the Energy Sector. Because of corruption and few personal interests to the detriment of our national interest, coupled with incompetence, management of the energy sector has proved a huge challenge for Mills’ Administration. Everything in the sector is now in shambles. The management of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and the management of fuel supplies in this country have been despicable to say the least. Since Mills’ Administration took office, there has been consistent shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) but the current shortage of the product is leaving severe untold hardships on the public who have over the years depended on gas to make economic living. The shortage indeed has disrupted many businesses including hospitality and commercial transportation compounding the problem of mass joblessness and hence poverty. There is nationwide shortage of kerosene spanning over a year affecting our people living in the rural areas which Mills’ government has turned a deaf ear to. So what do we pay the president and his incompetent team for? I am tempted to ask.

Mr. President, so is that the best your government can do? Who is responsible to make sure that these reckless intermittent shortages of fuel supply will be a thing of the past for the betterment of the poor farmers in the rural areas to at least enjoy their poor lives?
Senseless blaming increase commercial transportation is not the answer to this needless problem. Do you blame shortage of kerosene also on increase in commercial transportation? The answer is no. Somebody must surely he held responsible for not living up to his duties.

I know there is one thing that is sure and certain and that is that “no condition is permanent”. I also know that change in the life of man is inevitable. This government can fool all of us some of the time but not all the time. In deed Mills’ government is really a shame.
